NEW DELHI: Full-page colour advertisements in leading newspapers reminded Indians on Friday that daughters bring joy to life in a campaign designed to tackle the country`s worsening gender imbalance.
Sex-selective abortions and female infanticide have left India with 914 girls for every 1,000 boys, its lowest since independence in 1947 and far below the global average of 1,050 girls for every 1,000 boys, census data shows.
They fill our lives with smiles. They are capable of doing everything, stated the adverts by the central state of Madhya Pradesh, featuring a photoshopped picture of the chief minister appearing to hold a girl.

How to win business in Libya...
Monday, 3 October 2011 - 3:14 PM SL Time
|
BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) Sept 23 - In August, as rebels fought forces loyal to President Muammar Gaddafi, two representatives of a British business consortium took a `rather long and arduous ferry journey from Malta` to the North African country.
`To describe it as a ferry would be very polite,` according to an executive at a London-based global engineering company, whose interests the two men represented. `I think it was a trawler.`
The men travelled to Libya at the invitation of the rebel administration. Britain, along with France and the United States, had given political and military support for the uprising against Gaddafi and sponsored the rebel leadership, the National Transitional Council (NTC). This was a chance to close some deals.

Occupy Wall Street. . Finally get mains stream media can`t ignore it ........
Saturday, 8 October 2011 - 4:54 PM SL Time

Wall Street should have seen it coming. After all, market forces were at work.
Take a financial crisis that yielded few prosecutions add a broken government in Washington then mix in millions of unemployed adults with nothing but time on their hands and it`s no wonder Occupy Wall Street came screaming out of the economic chaos.
The calls for revolution echoing from Lower Manhattan to Washington and the rest of the nation are also conjuring up comparisons to the battle cries of another political movement, the tea party.

Sri Lanka woos Solheim in Norway for Countering war crimes allegations:
Friday, 21 October 2011 - 3:20 PM SL Time
|
In the wake of the LTTE targeting Sri Lanka over accountability issues, the government has sought the support of one-time Norwegian peacemaker, Erik Solheim to counter those trying to haul the Sri Lankan leadership up before an international war crimes tribunal.
Solheim holds the Environment and International Cooperation portfolio in the current Norwegian government.
Government sources told `The Island` that President Mahinda Rajapaksa`s special representative, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva had met Solheim and Norwegian Foreign Minister, Jonas Gahr Store, separately. Responding to a query, sources said that a lengthy GoSL statement on Minister de Silva`s confab with the Foreign Minister didn`t refer to his meeting with Solheim. Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa accompanied de Silva, Leader of the House and President Rajapaksa`s choice as his chief negotiator for two rounds of talks in Geneva, in early 2006.

WikiLeaks: LTTE defeat upsets Asian drug trade says US embassy
Sunday, 23 October 2011 - 5:11 PM SL Time
|
The military defeat of the LTTE in May, 2009, may have changed the dynamics of the drug trade in Asia. Since 1983, the LTTE was involved in bulk delivery of heroin and cannabis from producing areas in Asia to consuming countries. Mumbai was the key link in the LTTE drug trade. While Sri Lanka`s coast remains highly vulnerable to transshipment of heroin moving from India, observers expect a dramatic reduction in drug-related activity in the region. the US embassy wrote to Washington.

This message of ethical and fair practices at the highly-patronised event was perhaps aimed at all investors, some of whom upon hearing the quotation chipped in saying that it applied to officials as well.

Billion of rupees get vanised from online lottery
Thursday, 27 October 2011 - 8:23 AM SL Time
|
In another glaring instance where public money has been wasted due to corruption, the country has lost a massive Rs.983 million as a result of an investment made in a Norwegian company a few years ago for an online lottery, the parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has revealed.
The lottery had been introduced during 2002-2004 by a then United National Party (UNP) government minister who later crossed over to the government. A COPE member told the Daily Mirror on condition of anonymity that the United People`s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Cabinet had however written off this transaction on October 28, 2009 apparently because of the influence wielded by this politician now in government ranks. If this lottery scheme had been in use, Sri Lanka`s Development Lotteries Board would have been adversely affected, he said and added that this powerful politician even contested the October 8 local council elections on the government`s ticket.
