Gas: A double-edged discovery
SRI Lanka has discovered gas. The sentence by itself is history-creating, but this fact alone does not mean economic prosperity.
There are many reasons to be cautious. One is the fact that there are many examples in the world where oil and gas deposits have not bought happiness and equitable development to countries. One of the best examples of this would be Nigeria, where its oil turned out to be a curse more than a blessing and its socioeconomic landscape is still peppered with disturbing political and cultural issues. Beset on all sides by AIDS, a tyranny and exploitation of its oil resources, the average man gained little from the `black gold` beneath his land.

Defence Counsel (DC) Nalin Ladduwahetty yesterday alleged that the so-called The Sunday Leader exclusive, captioned `Gota Ordered Them Shot`published on Dec. 13, 2009, had been essentially based on a report carried by The Daily Mirror in its May 21, 2009 issue. The attorney-at-law said that it was nothing but a `cut and paste` job as the younger generation would say, though he would call it copying.

Tillekaratne Dilshans failure to make an impression with the bat during the current Test series against Pakistan has raised concerns of the national selectors who reportedly had a strong business discussion with the Sri Lanka captain and informed in no uncertain terms to pull his socks up and perform as a batsman, sources told daily Mirror.
National selectors have reportedly pointed out to Dilshan that he has been appointed the captain for Sri Lanka痴 forthcoming South Africa tour which begins in December, but cautioned him to avoid taking things for granted as continued failure with the bat would result in any player being dropped irrespective of the position he holds in the team. Sources said that opener Lahiru Thirimanne who played four Tests but failed to establish his mark yet would be dropped from the third Test against Pakistan starting on Thursday at Sharjah.
