The Defence Ministry and the Army are in the process of being shifted to alternative locations to pave the way for Sri Lanka`s first 7-star hotel facing the Galle Face green promenade. Authoritative military sources told The Island that some sections of the Army Headquarters would begin moving out shortly to temporary `locations`. The Defence Ministry and the SLA headquarters would hand over six acres encompassing the SLA grounds. Subsequently, the government would hand over the remaining four acre-land housing headquarters units to the Hong Kong-based Shangri La Asia Limited. When Sri Lanka won her first World Cup game - against test playing nation India
Thursday, 20 January 2011 - 1:22 PM SL Time

by Rex Clementine

Believe it or not, it took India 20 years to win a World Cup game against Sri Lanka. The teams` first met in 1979 in the Prudential World Cup in England and it was the Sri Lankans who came up with an upset win on that occasion, at a time when they were not full members of the ICC and had to qualify to play the tournament. This also was Sri Lanka`s first ever World Cup win. After Sri Lanka were allowed to play in the inaugural 1975 World Cup, the other ICC Associates too were keen to play in the tournament and thus the game`s governing body had to create the ICC Trophy, a tournament prior to the World Cup to determine who will go through for the big event. Sri Lanka`s hopes of qualifying were affected by the fact that the then government had instructed the board to boycott the game against Israel due to political reasons. `There was some pressure as we had to forfeit the points from our game against Israel. Our chances would have got affected, but we played really well from thereon to qualify,` Anura Tennakoon, the Sri Lankan captain on that tour told `The Island`.

Thursday, 20 January 2011 - 5:18 PM SL Time

This is a very rare clip of the maestro, taken from a Sinhala movie.

The unique success of Muhammad Junaid Muhammad Lafir in winning the World Amateur Billiards Championship in Bombay, in November-December 1973, being victorious against all his opponents and also scoring the highest break of 859, is an achievement without parallel in the annals of Sport in Sri Lanka.
