Breast-feeding babies may provide children with an academic advantage later in life, according to a new study.
Infants breast-fed for at least six months after birth scored higher on math, reading and spelling tests at age 10 than those breast-fed for less than six months, the researchers said. The benefit was particularly pronounced in boys.
The results held even after the researchers took into account factors that may have influenced test scores, including the mothers_day.jsp' class=black>mother`s educational level, family income and whether or not the children had stories read to them when they were younger.

Effect of compassion meditation on neuroendocrine, innate immune and behavioral responses to psychosocial stress.
Friday, 14 January 2011 - 12:33 AM SL Time
|
Meditation practices may impact physiological pathways that are modulated by stress and relevant to disease. While much attention has been paid to meditation practices that emphasize calming the mind, improving focused attention, or developing mindfulness, less is known about meditation practices that foster compassion. Accordingly, the current study examined the effect of compassion meditation on innate immune, neuroendocrine and behavioral responses to psychosocial stress and evaluated the degree to which engagement in meditation practice influenced stress reactivity. Sixty-one healthy adults were randomized to 6 weeks of training in compassion meditation (n=33) or participation in a health discussion control group (n=28) followed by exposure to a standardized laboratory stressor (Trier social stress test [TSST]). Physiologic and behavioral responses to the TSST were determined by repeated assessments of plasma concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6 and cortisol as well as total distress scores on the Profile of Mood States (POMS). No main effect of group assignment on TSST responses was found for IL-6, cortisol or POMS scores. However, within the meditation group, increased meditation practice was correlated with decreased TSST-induced IL-6 (r(p)=-0.46, p=0.008) and POMS distress scores (r(p)=-0.43, p=0.014). Moreover, individuals with meditation practice times above the median exhibited lower TSST-induced IL-6 and POMS distress scores compared to individuals below the median, who did not differ from controls. These data suggest that engagement in compassion meditation may reduce stress-induced immune and behavioral responses, although future studies are required to determine whether individuals who engage in compassion meditation techniques are more likely to exhibit reduced stress reactivity

Earth`s `wobble` means your zodiac sign may be wrong
Earth`s shifts on its axis over the past 3,000 years have changed the 12 zodiac signs. For example, think your sign is Aquarius? You may be a Pisces. (There`s also a 13th sign, Ophiuchus, that`s based on a constellation the ancient Babylonians threw out for symmetry thousands of years ago.)
So who`s to blame for this scam on zodiac devotees?
The ancient Babylonians based the zodiac on which constellation the sun appeared to be in when a person was born. Since then, the moon`s has exerted a gravitation pull on Earth, causing a `wobble` on its axis that has shifted the stars` alignment by about a month, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.

MEditation, Food, Sex, Nusic - All Releases the Happy Hormones (Dopamine) - Increased dopamine tone during meditation-induced change of consciousness
Wednesday, 19 January 2011 - 1:10 AM SL Time
|
This is the first in vivo demonstration of an association between endogenous neurotransmitter release and conscious experience. Using 11C-raclopride PET we demonstrated increased endogenous dopamine release in the ventral striatum during Yoga Nidra meditation. Yoga Nidra is characterized by a depressed level of desire for action, associated with decreased blood flow in prefrontal, cerebellar and subcortical regions, structures thought to be organized in open loops subserving executive control. In the striatum, dopamine modulates excitatory glutamatergic synapses of the projections from the frontal cortex to striatal neurons, which in turn project back to the frontal cortex via the pallidum and ventral thalamus. The present study was designed to investigate whether endogenous dopamine release increases during loss of executive control in meditation. Participants underwent two 11C-raclopride PET scans: one while attending to speech with eyes closed, and one during active meditation. The tracer competes with endogenous dopamine for access to dopamine D2 receptors predominantly found in the basal ganglia. During meditation, 11C-raclopride binding in ventral striatum decreased by 7.9%. This corresponds to a 65% increase in endogenous dopamine release. The reduced raclopride binding correlated significantly with a concomitant increase in EEG theta activity, a characteristic feature of meditation. All participants reported a decreased desire for action during meditation, along with heightened sensory imagery. The level of gratification and the depth of relaxation did not differ between the attention and meditation conditions. Here we show increased striatal dopamine release during meditation associated with the experience of reduced readiness for action. It is suggested that being in the conscious state of meditation causes a suppression of cortico-striatal glutamatergic transmission. To our knowledge this is the first time in vivo evidence has been provided for regulation of conscious states at a synaptic level.

Sri Lankan Democracy, And Corruption By Election Commissoner - Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka`s party the Democratic National Allaiance (DNA) has been rejected by Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake
Thursday, 20 January 2011 - 11:35 PM SL Time

Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka`s party the Democratic National Allaiance (DNA) has been rejected by Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake on the ground that it failed to produce audited accounts when applying for registration under the title Democratic Party, Elections Department officials said.
A top official of the Elections Department who insisted on anonymity told Daily Mirror yesterday that it was always difficult for a political party to be registered under the present law. The official said that the applications sent by numerous other parties too were rejected as a result. The former Army Commander contested the General Election in April 2010 under Trophy symbol of the Democratic National Alliance. Meanwhile, Mr. Alles said that he was now contemplating legal action against the Elections Commissioner. We have been asked to submit audit reports. How can we provide such details without completing not even one year in active politics? We need to complete a financial year to prepare accounts, he said. Asked what he would next, he replied, We will sue the Commissioner. Mr. Dissanayake will have to pay compensation for the damage caused to us.

Quantum Teleportation Is a Reality. Now, Time Teleportation Is possible
Friday, 21 January 2011 - 8:46 AM SL Time
|
Before, we knew that quantum teleportation works in space. Two identical particles at different locations are linked in such a way that, when you change the state of one, the other one instantly changes in exactly the same way, no matter how many miles or light-years are between them. This is a phenomenon that defies our understanding of reality, and it just got even more complex with this discovery.
University of Queensland`s scientists Jay Olson and Timothy Ralph claim that the quantum entanglement is a fundamental part of the universe, and it works both in space and time, so changing the state of particle today instantly changes the same particle in the future, even while the particle will not exist between those two points. [ In other words, Entangled quantum particles can travel into the future without actually being present during the time between now and the future.]

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime chief has said that the drugs money worth billions of dollars kept the financial system afloat at the height of the global crisis. It has been observed that in many instances, the money from drugs was the only liquid investment capital.
Antonio Maria Costa, head of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, said he has seen evidence that the proceeds of organised crime were `the only liquid investment capital` available to some banks on the brink of collapse last year. He said that a majority of the $352bn ( 216bn) of drugs profits was absorbed into the economic system as a result.

A COMPUTER virus created to sabotage Iran`s nuclear programme and stop Tehran developing an atomic bomb was designed by American and Israeli experts, it was claimed yesterday.
The Stuxnet computer worm, the most sophisticated cyber weapon ever made, crippled uranium enrichment facilities across Iran last year and set the country back five years in the nuclear arms race.
US military and intelligence sources have told The New York Times that a simulation of Iran`s uranium enrichment facility was built at the nuclear plant at Dimona, in southern Israel, possibly using centrifuges identical to Iran`s, surrendered by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.

It is indeed amazing that Neelagiri`s abuse was not detected by the higher ups at Pinnawela, which speaks volumes about the lethargy of the administration there. Is Pinnawela becoming a mere circus, at a time when circuses are becoming obsolete the world over. Baby elephants are fed milk at a price of 500 rupees per bottle. But actually only a quarter bottle is given. I asked why quarter bottle and the keeper replied if so much milk is given by everyone as one bottle each then it would not be good for the baby. The baby elephants are supposed to have a limited number of milk bottles per feed.

The year of the Rabbit is traditionally associated with home and family, artistic pursuits, diplomacy, and keeping the peace. Therefore, 2011 is very likely to be a relatively calmer one than 2010 both on the world scene, as well as on a personal level.
Conversely, nations will also become more insular and increasingly lock down their borders to protect against the `other`. However, 2011 will also see new art movements projecting a distinct national identity taking the world by storm. Shrewd and creative new business partnerships will also form to the benefit of all.
