Sunday, 5 September 2010 - 11:21 PM SL Time

In the not too distant future, your family doctor may pluck a hair from your head to see if you`re in imminent danger of a heart attack.

That`s because your hair contains an accurate record of your body`s production of cortisol a hormone that surges through your body when you`re under stress. And stress can be the trigger for a potentially deadly cardiac event.

Researchers at the University of Western Ontario say they have developed a test to measure cortisol levels in hair. What`s more, they have used the test to show that the stress hormone can be exceedingly high in the months preceding a heart attack.

The Grand Design - By Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow - Hawkingand Mlodinow return with a unifying Grand Design
Monday, 6 September 2010 - 4:15 AM SL Time

Hawking, a physicist who until retiring last year held Sir Isaac Newton`s chair as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, startled the publishing world in 1988 with his mega-seller, A Brief History of Time. It tackled mind-bending concepts of general relativity and quantum mechanics in an engaging style that invited nonspecialists, even nonscientists, to grapple with those ideas for themselves.

Most lost their way partway through the journey, but almost all declared themselves exhilarated and enlightened by the struggle and captivated by Hawking`s style.

The DNF leader and MP Gen. Fonseka said today (8), when rulers oppress the people and through an authoritarian constitution engage in destroying opposition, history has proved that such rulers get thrown out lock, stock and barrel via revolution of the people or by army conspiracies.

Gen. Fonseka announced this when he addressed a media briefing at the Parliamentary complex when revealing the stand of his party in regard to the 18th amendment.

Although it is his hope that such a situation does not arise in this country, but if a Dictatorial rule follows, such revolutions and conspiracies will become inevitable, he added. His party`s subsequent course of action will depend on the trajectory of these amendments, he pointed out.

DANDELION - LATEX for Tire Production - USE This as a COVER CROP Under NAtural rubber- Rubber Planters Start this. Next Few decades this will be Commercialized
Friday, 17 September 2010 - 10:48 AM SL Time

Most natural rubber comes from rubber trees in Southeast Asia, but this source is now under threat from a fungus. Researchers have optimized the Russian dandelion to make it suitable for large-scale rubber production.

Anyone who has picked dandelions as a child will be familiar with the white liquid that seeps out of the stalks as you break them off. Viscous, sticky - and a much sought-after material: natural latex. Around 30,000 everyday products contain natural rubber, everything from car tires, catheter tubes, latex gloves to tops for drinks bottles. Car tires, for instance, would not be elastic enough without the incorporation of natural rubber. The bulk of this material comes from rubber trees in Southeast Asia. Rubber produced in this way can, however, cause allergic reactions, which is clearly an issue with clinical products. A fungus is also creating concern for rubber cultivators. In South America the infection is now so widespread that large-scale cultivation has become virtually impossible. The disease now also appears to have taken root in Southeast Asia`s rubber belt. Fungicides still provide at least temporary protection. But if the fungus disease was to reach epidemic proportions, chemical crop protection would be rendered useless - experts fear that the natural latex industry could collapse if that were to happen.

AVACADO Is Lowers Cholesterol When Eat In Moderation, Is IT Exported ?
Wednesday, 29 September 2010 - 3:33 AM SL Time

It`s true that avocados are high in fat -- one reason they`ve earned the nickname `butter pear.` A medium-sized avocado contains 30 grams of fat. But now nutritionists are taking another look. They`re finding that most of the fat in an avocado is monounsaturated -- the `good` kind that actually lowers cholesterol levels, the U.S. government recently revised its official nutrition guidelines to urge Americans to eat more avocados.

High in the Good Fat

The 45 volunteers who ate avocados every day for a week experienced an average 17% drop in total blood cholesterol. Their cholesterol ratio also changed in a healthy way: Their levels of LDL (low-density lipoprotein, or `bad fat`) and triglycerides, both associated with heart disease, went down. Their HDL (high-density lipoprotein, or `good fat`) levels, which tend to lower the risk of heart disease, climbed.
