SRI LANKA: The state of denial and the descent to silliness
Thursday, 5 August 2010 - 11:09 PM SL Time

For several decades now the Sri Lankan people have been exposed to extraordinary acts of separation, large scale forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, torture, illegal arrest and detention. This and large scale displacement of people from their homes by way of internal displacement or by leaving the country altogether and the disappearance of even elementary forms of protection available to people within the legal and social sphere are among the many issues that have caused massive forms of trauma in the population as a whole.

The story about Minister Mervyn Silva tying a Samurdhi Officer to a tree as punishment for not participating in a dengue prevention programme in the Kelaniya district was bad enough. The statement made by the UPFA General Secretary, Susil Premajayantha that the party or the government is not responsible for the actions of Minister Mervyn Silva opens up far more serious issues. Politics in Lanka is a dirty game

Sans sense of honesty, honour or shame.

On election-campaigns that squander millions,

Parliament`s pack of jokers, jerks,

Abuse their power for self and perks,

Goons and buffoons, men of straw,

You smile and say clever things to your friends in a raised voice to look more deserving than everyone else in line. Eventually -- if you`re lucky -- he unclips the velvet rope, the door swings open and you`re swept into the party. He refastens the rope. Now everyone behind you is a sucker.

Every immigrant to Canada thinks he`s the last good newcomer. It`s been like that since the arrival of the first settlers. The natives thought little of the French. After the conquest, the English were reviled as inferior, maladroit rubes. As the countries of origin of our newcomers became more diverse, each new wave was regarded as lazy, grasping, unwashed and unwanted. Trace your family`s roots and not only are you guaranteed to find an immigrant but also likely an ethnic or cultural community that was denigrated in its time.
