India Gives Billion Dollar Soft Loan To Bangaldesh

DHAKA India gave Bangladesh a billion-dollar soft loan Saturday, the biggest credit package New Delhi has ever earmarked for any nation, highlighting warming ties between the neighbours, officials said.
The line of credit also marked the single largest loan Bangladesh has received from any nation, development bank or donor agency, Dhaka`s Economic Relations Division secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said.
Ties were chilly between the South Asian neighbours from 2001 to 2006 when Bangladesh was ruled by an Islamist-allied government and New Delhi regularly accused Dhaka of harbouring Indian insurgents and fostering militancy.

Rural demand drives India car sales record

Car sales in India hit a record high in July on the back of soaring demand in rural areas, boosting the country`s prospects for double-digit economic growth this fiscal year.
Indian domestic car sales rose 38 per cent to 158,764 in July, compared with 115,084 in the same period last year, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
China`s car sales rose 13.6 per cent, a sharp drop compared with a 63.2 per cent rise in March this year.

There was nothing inevitable about India becoming a democracy. At Independence, even before the partition massacres took place, the nation was falling apart. The Quit India movement had left large parts of the north ungovernable, and civil power was breaking down across the country. The armed forces were about to be divided between India and Pakistan and the most senior Indian officer, Gen K.M. Cariappa, told the Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, it might be a good idea to have a short spell of military rule. Fortunately, this idea was rejected, and India did not go the way of some of its neighbours, where politicians share power uneasily with the armed forces.

LAHORE, Aug 14: Pakistan should move away from the zero-sum security rivalry with India to be able to emerge as a successful, modern democratic society, says a distinguished American foreign policy expert.
It is vital for Pakistan to shift its strategic focus from a dead-end losing competition with India to a developmental competition, Prof Walter Russel Mead emphasised in an interview with Dawn during his recent visit to Lahore.

Embrace Islam or leave Kashmir, Sikhs threatened

20 August 2010, SRINAGAR: Sikhs in the Kashmir Valley have received anonymous letters from Islamic militants asking them to either embrace Islam and join the protests against civilian killings or pack up and leave the Valley. The 60,000-strong Sikh community is the single largest minority group in the Valley.
An organisation of Kashmiri Sikhs said that several community members have received these letters. `Community members have received unsigned letters at various places,` said All Party Sikh Coordination Committee (ASCC) coordinator Jagmohan Singh Raina. He said the community has decided to stay put and fight these `evil designs` at a meeting in Srinagar on Thursday.

Mahindra Signs Pact To Acquire Majority Stakes In SsangYong Motors

MUMBAI: Auto major Mahindra & Mahindra on Monday said it has entered into an agreement to acquire a majority stake in beleaguered South Korean vehicle maker SsangYong Motor Company.
In a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) said that it has `signed a memorandum of understanding with SsangYong Motor to acquire a majority stake in the South Korean SUV maker.`
The agreement will be followed by a detailed due diligence process and finalisation of definitive agreements, the filing added.
