Lanka should be wary of its friends in west
Sunday, 5 December 2010 - 11:27 PM SL Time

President Mahinda Rajapaksa`s visit to the United Kingdom to address the University of Oxford has caused a furore: the address was cancelled because of `security concerns`, the British government has denied it had a hand in that decision and government MPs have accused United National Party MP Jayalath Jayawardena of orchestrating events, and manhandled him in parliament.

The exact reasons for the cancellation remain unclear.
Although `security reasons` have been cited officially, that is not a plausible explanation. Events, which are much more security intensive, are held in Britain without difficulty.

Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir are among the big names released by their IPL franchises, along with Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle and Andrew Symonds, while Virat Kohli is the surprise retention for his team for the next three seasons. Women, don`t settle for less
Friday, 10 December 2010 - 8:35 AM SL Time

December 9, 2010, 8:19 pm

It is heartening that the female legislators of Sri Lanka have joined forces to fight for the rights of the womenfolk underrepresented in Parliament.

The Women Parliamentarians` Caucus chaired by Minister Sumedha Jayasena has said 25 per cent of 225 seats in Parliament should be reserved for women. She says female representation at present is as low as 6.5 per cent, but all political parties have failed to address the issue. There are seats reserved for women in other countries, she points out. Norway has allocated 40 per cent of its national legislature for women lawmakers, the US 17 per cent, the UK 22 per cent and China 21 per cent.

The man and his dog
Tuesday, 14 December 2010 - 12:33 PM SL Time

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that his faithful dog had been dead for many years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. As he reached the wall, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch, and the street that led to the gate made from pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

THE TRANSITION
Tuesday, 21 December 2010 - 2:10 AM SL Time

`I am Not a girl/boy...Not yet a woman/man`

You are now entering a transitional period which inevitably creates an identity gap between ..... who you think you are.?.... and what you really are.? This gap is mainly widened when your mind develops to move away from that childhood innocence....when you are rather shy about your father`s advice and mothers_day.jsp' class=black>mother`s goodnight kisses.
