NASA Life Discovery: New Bacteria Makes DNA With Arsenic
Saturday, 4 December 2010 - 3:16 AM SL Time
|
scientists have found life on Earth that`s perhaps the most `alien` organism yet seen.
A new species of bacteria found in California`s Mono Lake is the first known life-form that uses arsenic to make its DNA and proteins, scientists announced today.
Dubbed the GFAJ-1 strain, the bacteria can substitute arsenic for phosphorus, one of the six main `building blocks` for most known life. The other key ingredients for life are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur.

Berlin - The British government`s concern for ex-pat Tamil voters in marginal constituencies at home drove London`s criticisms of the Sri Lankan government`s actions in last year`s ending of the country`s civil war, WikiLeaks diplomatic cables suggest.
David Miliband, then British foreign secretary in a Labour government, was outspoken in criticism of the actions of the Colombo government as it closed in on Tamil fighters in the north of the island, where many thousand civilians were also sheltering.

Bell Pottinger propose meeting with moderate Tamil Diaspora
Monday, 6 December 2010 - 2:25 AM SL Time
|
Information leaking out of Sri Lanka High Commission confirm, the image building consultants Bell Pottinger suggesting to the President during his stay in London to engage with the section of the Tamils in the UK.
They have said this engagement with the High Commission is vital to counter the LTTE campaign in the UK.
At the public meeting held in the High Commission before President`s rushed departure to Colombo in fear of arrest warrant being issued by the UK Court, only six Tamils and three Muslim community members had participated. The Tamils and Muslims engagement with the High Commission has dwindled as a result of the hard line policies of the government of Sri Lanka and the incompatibility of the High Commission to accommodate or respect the Tamil views.

Legendary for its length, esoteric language and liberal sprinkling of Latin, the Indian diplomatic dispatch may finally have met its nemesis: the leaked US embassy cables.
According to the Indian Express newspaper, the ministry of external affairs in Delhi has asked trainee diplomats to read the cables `and get a hang of the brevity with which thoughts and facts have been expressed`.

US Attorney General Says WikiLeaks Puts Americans at Risk
Turkish PM Threatens to Sue Over Wikileaks Claims
A London court has ordered WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to be held in custody while he fights extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over alleged sex offenses.
The court denied Assange bail Tuesday, hours after he turned himself in to British police.
The case against Assange stems from his encounters with two women in August. His lawyer says the dispute is over `consensual but unprotected sex` and that the charges are politically motivated.

Astronomers Find First Evidence Of Other Universes - Penrose Conformal Cyclic cosmology and the concentric circle evidence for it that was recently offered.)
Thursday, 16 December 2010 - 10:57 AM SL Time
|
Our cosmos was `bruised` in collisions with other universes. Now astronomers have found the first evidence of these impacts in the cosmic microwave background
There`s something exciting afoot in world of cosmology. Last month, Roger Penrose at the University of Oxford and Vahe Gurzadyan at Yerevan State University in Armenia announced that they had found patterns of concentric circles in the cosmic microwave background, the echo of the Big Bang.
This, they say, is exactly what you`d expect if the universe were eternally cyclical. By that, they mean that each cycle ends with a big bang that starts the next cycle. In this model, the universe is a kind of cosmic Russian Doll, with all previous universes contained within the current one.

Chavez given power to rule by decree for 18 months - granted power to rule by decree for 18 months by his followers in parliament.
Sunday, 19 December 2010 - 2:17 AM SL Time
|
His critics said the move turns the country into a near-dictatorship. It comes just two weeks before a new national assembly is sworn in with a larger opposition bloc that could have frustrated some of his plans to create a socialist state.
The firebrand leader had only asked his allies for the right to govern without referring to congress for a year. Instead, they handed him the powers for 18 months as proof of their `revolutionary commitment`, said Cilia Flores, the national assembly president.
The official reason for the move was to allow Mr Chavez to deal with the devastating aftermath of weeks of floods by fast-tracking tax increases and funding for construction of new homes.

Can You See Sounds [Music], Tastes in Colors and in Shapes - Synesthesia - DO YOU HAVE IT ?
Tuesday, 21 December 2010 - 2:36 AM SL Time
|
In the psychological phenomenon known as `synesthesia,` individuals` sensory systems are a bit more intertwined than usual. Some people, for example, report seeing colors when musical notes are played.
One of the most common forms is grapheme-color synesthesia, in which letters or numbers (collectively called `graphemes`) are highlighted with particular colors. Although synesthesia has been well documented, it is unknown whether these experiences, reported as vivid and realistic, are actually being perceived or if they are a byproduct of some other psychological mechanism such as memory.

The return of the Asians - Ranil Wickremesinghe
Sunday, 26 December 2010 - 3:50 AM SL Time
|
Asia stands poised to recapture the global economy. But the success of this process will depend on right political decisions and appropriate action being taken by governments and civil society in the region.
By the 4th century B.C., Asia had begun its first cycle of economic growth and power. This was the reason why Alexander the Great decided to travel eastward to establish an empire. At that time there was nothing worthwhile to the west of Greece. On the other hand, to the east of Greece was Persia, and beyond Persia were rich kingdoms in India and China. A Roman Emperor once complained that Rome had to import all its luxuries from India and China, but had, in turn, nothing to offer these Asian countries. In fact, until the 1820s, Asia accounted for 60 to 75 per cent of the world`s Gross Domestic Product.

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas

He won`t have to use our dirty chimney flue
Just bring him through the front door,

A team of researchers has found a link between the size of our amygdala, the epicenter of our emotions, and the size and complexity of our social networks. The bigger the amygdala, the bigger and more complex the network.
In a study published yesterday in Nature, doctors from Boston University and Harvard University measured the social networks of 58 adults based on two factors: the number of people they were in regular contact with (size), and the number of social groups these contacts could be divided into (complexity). They also measured the volume of the participants` amygdalas and hippocampus, as a control.
