The anti-wheat flour push is a cruel blow to the stomach for bakers and consumers.
Some 2,000 bakers islandwide have been forced to close down their businesses after the state started a campaign to discourage the consumption of wheat-flour based foods.
As a result, bakers and hundreds of others who depended on the bakery industry have lost their jobs, All-Ceylon Bakery Owners` Association president N. K. Jayawardena told the Sunday Times.

Porn Industry Launched Mass Lawsuit Against 17,000 Users
Monday, 15 November 2010 - 5:35 PM SL Time
|
Today AdultCopyrightCompany has filed another copyright violation complaint against almost 10,000 BitTorrent users, making it the largest mass lawsuit ever. With this complaint, the number of accused reached 17,000 and keeps growing.
If you think it`s still the music industry which makes it into history with their ill sue-em-all litigation campaign, you are wrong. The efforts of the music industry are becoming pale when compared to the exploits of the porn industry, where AdultCopyrightCompany is targeting alleged file-sharers by the thousands, not hundreds.

Growing backlash against Air Port body scanners, pat-downs
Wednesday, 17 November 2010 - 9:45 AM SL Time
|
(CNN) -- A growing pilot and passenger revolt over full-body scans and what many consider intrusive pat-downs couldn`t have come at a worse time for the nation`s air travel system.
Thanksgiving, the busiest travel time of the year, is less than two weeks away.
Grassroots groups are urging travelers to either not fly or to protest by opting out of the full-body scanners and undergo time-consuming pat-downs instead.
Such concerns prompted a meeting Friday of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano with leaders of travel industry groups.

Is liberalisation of University education is the solution like liberalisation of Telecom?
Thursday, 18 November 2010 - 3:29 PM SL Time
|
Remember the not so distant past when obtaining a telephone connection entailed so much hassle and prolong delays? They were the perils of state monopoly. How dismal was the performance of the state owned telecom could be well explained by the fact that within two years after its privatization, the new management issued more telephone connections than its predecessor issued throughout its history. Sri Lanka underwent an information revolution thanks to the liberalization of telecommunication industry and today we are privileged to have at our disposal the most up-to-date mobile telephone services. Most importantly, the state owned Telecom didn`t die in the face of intense competition, it adjusted itself to new challenges, thanks to the Japanese management. Today it is a far more efficient and profitable business venture than when it was the sole monopoly of telecommunication.

Sunday, 21 November 2010 - 9:14 AM SL Time
|
The budget for 2011 to be presented tomorrow is critical for the achievement of the economic goals of the President`s second term of office. It is through the budget that the economic programme of the government could be implemented. The foremost objective of the President`s second term of office is to achieve rapid economic development, reduce unemployment, mitigate poverty, reduce inequality and regional economic differences and improve the social welfare of the people. Tomorrow`s budget would be critical for the achievement of these economic and social development aspirations. More heads to roll today ???

According to the media, one of the first functions of the President as he embarks on his second term of office, is the removal of key public servants who have failed to perform. The media reported that several Secretaries of Ministries, Corporation Headsand Board Chairmen were billed to be removed following this decision.
Given the rate at which political appointees, with little or absolutely no higher education qualifications have continued to make a mess of some key government institutions, the speed with which this action needs to be implemented can not be stressed more.

Rubber, coconut or oil palm ?
Monday, 29 November 2010 - 5:42 PM SL Time
|
It is unfortunate that successive ministers in charge of the subject of plantation industries failed to take a firm decision on expansion of the oil palm cultivation in Sri Lanka. This decision should have in fact been made 50 years ago, or at least in early 1990s when rubber prices declined drastically to the point many growers and plantation companies even stopped tapping. However, though belated, now that there appears to be a minister with a mission and resolve, and a decision has been taken, the future only will tell whether it is right or wrong but decisions need to be made on available evidence and calculated risks.
