Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said the lifestyle of most Sri Lankans invite diseases even at a young age. TV addiction and tuition classes after school have created an unhealthy youth generation, the Minister said as Chief Guest at the 10th Sir Frank Gunasekara Memorial Oration held at the Hilton Hotel yesterday.
A new health policy will be implemented soon to create a healthy student generation. If the people are physically and mentally sound, the country will not need to spend a lot of money to treat them, he said.

Name a country that has developed successfully without first rate universities, or at least one? Not a single! Sri Lanka has, man-for-man, a world class military, but it once had world class schools and universities, which is no longer the case. If we are to be strong, defeat our enemies and compete with our rivals, we need our first rate military to be supplemented with a first rate education system producing globally competitive high quality human resources.

President Mahinda Rajapakse has said that it is his fervent aspiration to see Sri Lanka`s university students becoming internationally qualified intellectuals rather than becoming mere indigenous scholars.
He has said that the university network in the country should be made research centres of Sri Lanka`s future development, to accelerate rebuilding of the nation, and for this purpose universities should produce versatile graduates. He has further said that the government has paved the way for intellectuals of the country to thrive forward with their aspirations. The president made these observations participating at the ceremony to inaugurate the newly constructed swimming pool of the Sri Jayawardenapura University yesterday (15.11.2010).

Colombo to be the most regulated city in the world

The Colombo city will be developed according to a systematic plan. The city beautification process will be carried out simultaneously, Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said.
`Colombo will be a slum free city,` he said at a panel discussion yesterday.
`Colombo has the major administration facility. The strategy to develop Colombo is important. We have identified certain areas for this purpose where rapid development will take place,` the Defence Secretary said.
`The Government is faced with the challenge of relocating 75,000 families who are mainly occupying the most valuable land and strategically vital canals in Colombo. We need to develop the city to attract global investors and to make it a beautiful capital,` he said.
