One-person dominated TGTE decided by narrow margin
[TamilNet, Friday, 01 October 2010, 01:49 GMT]
The question of one-person dominated leadership or collective leadership was not at all taken for voting in the TGTE Constitutional Assembly meeting held in New York Thursday and Friday, TGTE members told TamilNet.
The voting took place only on the question of whether there should be three regional deputies or not. 42 voted in favour of having deputies and 41 voted against it.
However, there was another voting to decide whether the `prime minister` as `supreme leader` nominating the three deputies or whether they should be elected by the Assembly.

Yalpana Nayanar was a blind minstrel who lived in the Chola country. One day he quarrelled with his wife over a delayed meal , packed up and left for the island Sri Lanka.
Once there somehow he managed to get an audience with the King , and sang for theKing to the accompaniment of his lute.
The King being extremely pleased honoured him with the gift of a tusked elephant, and by the donation of a land on the northern extremity of the island in perpetuity.

Bangladesh to Gain from Lankan Absence in EU Apparel Market
Friday, 8 October 2010 - 5:52 PM SL Time
|
Sri Lanka being excised from the Generalised System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) status from the EU is reported to allow Bangladesh to exploit the space as it is a competing entity to the Lankan ready-made garment industry. According to The Daily Star, the largest subscribed English daily of Bangladesh stated the country was enjoying the benefits of the EU decision to withdraw zero-tariff from Sri Lanka, among other factor helped garment export growth.
The GSP+ status gives 16 poor nations preferential access to the EU in return for strict adherence to human rights and democratic principles. Sri Lanka lost EU`s GSP+ duty free entry for violating international covenants relating to human and civil rights while exacting ethnic control over Tamil diaspora. However, statistics indicate after the loss of GSP+ status, Sri Lanka has not been impacted much though the period is too short to analyse it in detail.

Toronto, Oct 9 (IANS) Throwing their support behind their former tormentor and army chief Sarath Fonseka, who was sentenced to 30 months in jail last week, the Sri Lankan Tamil community in Canada Thursday condemned the Rajapaksa government for its treatment of the former military boss.
`We had problems with Fonseka as a military general, but we have no differences with him as a politician. He has been treated unjustly and jailed by a kangaroo court at the direction of (President) Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family clique which is running the country,`` Canadian Tamil Congress national spokesman David Poopalapillai told IANS.

Brothers who tamed the Tigers, says Report
Monday, 18 October 2010 - 1:47 AM SL Time

Wars can still be won, even against formidable terrorist organisations. And Sri Lanka shows how. That is the core message of the country`s security supremo, Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa in a rare interview with The Australian.
His office is in the Defence Ministry - his brother, President Mahinda Rajapaksa, holds the title of Defence Minister - a British colonial era building bristling with armed soldiers, alongside a highly fortified military base on a prime location on Colombo`s beautiful sandy foreshore.
