The Voice Of The People, Gods Or Asses?
Monday, 4 October 2010 - 4:04 PM SL Time
|
Vox Populi, Vox Dei The voice of the people is the voice of the gods is the belief that our civics teacher of those years after Independence, tried to drill into us in Latin and English.
Half a century later, we have begun to wonder whether this principle so dear to believers in democracy should be changed to Vox Populi, Vox Assimus the voice of the people is the voice of the asses.
We are inclined to this conclusion when during our waking hour in the mornings, the sound of our neighbour`s TV waft across to us giving us a compendium of the day`s news and views in most of the front pages of the newspapers. This includes sycophantic views of the notable and quotable governing us and if these are their views reflecting the views accepted by the people public opinion then these people certainly qualify to be called asses.

Bread, rice and poonac - Editor The Island
Wednesday, 6 October 2010 - 6:26 PM SL Time

Bread prices have shot up again. Some government worthies, far removed from reality, want the public to eat rice if bread is too expensive. Yes, people must be encouraged to consume more and more rice. However, that should be done not because the government does want to step in to bring down flour prices but because rice is superior to wheat flour in terms of nutritious value and rice consumption helps the country to cut down on its massive import bill. But, what about the poor people like the estate workers heavily dependent on ready-to-eat bread and easy-to-prepare roti for survival.

Democracy and duplicity
Sunday, 10 October 2010 - 1:40 PM SL Time
|
If a just, free and fair society has prevailed in the world so far, it is democracy that has played a key role in sustaining it. The essential features of democracy include representative government, judicial and media freedom, human rights and the rule of law, transparency and accountability and continuing moves towards the more equitable distribution of wealth and resources among the people.
Despite deceptions and distortions, democracy has contributed much towards the practical wellbeing and welfare of the people and gone beyond mere theory or concept. Unfortunately, the self-styled champions of democracy mainly in the West have often turned out to be self-righteous or sanctimonious, if not whitewashed sepulchres, preaching often from rooftops but practising little.

Is it beginning of another turmoil or would sanity prevail?

The President keeps insisting that the family of Sarath Fonseka must ask for a pardon and his release. But that would be an admission of guilt. But he does not think he is guilty nor do many other people who have rallied around his cause. Does the law demand confession? Doesn`t he have a right to act according to his conscience?
The US Government as well as liberal opinion wanted Sarath Fonseka to be tried by the civilian courts which are bound to follow the Criminal Procedure Code and due processes of law in a transparent manner. But the President did not heed this call and instead charged him before military tribunals. But he has been proved guilty and there is no further case for insisting that he must accept his guilt and seek a pardon. Those who are sentenced after a court hearing do not have to re-affirm their guilt. The right to confess or not is available for all those who are charged before courts. So is it reasonable to ask that Sarath Fonseka should accept his guilt and seek a pardon personally when he does not consider himself guilty of the charges on which he was found guilty by the military court? According to St. Francis De Sales, judgments of men are rash. `Oh, how displeasing are rash judgments to God! The judgments of the children of men are rash, because they are not the Judges one of another, and therefore usurp to themselves the office of our Lord. They are rash, because the principal malice of sin depends on the intent of the heart, which is an impenetrable secret to us. They are not only rash, but also impertinent, because everyone has enough to do to judge himself without taking upon him to judge his neighbour`.
