Nandhimitra-
The first giant warrior was Nandhimitra, a nephew of a Sinhalese general in Elara`s army. He lived in the South of Anuradhapura. He was named Mittha after his father. It is said that when his mother went to the well to fetch water she was in the habit of tying a rope or strap around his body and fastening it to a grinding stone, so that he would not stray outside. One day when the mother was away, he dragged the heavy stone after him and later broke the rope and freed himself. Thus, he became known as Nandhi- mittha.

Brothers and Sisters, let us take a moment to bow our heads in honor of those True Sons of Sri Lanka who cannot be with us today in what we acknowledge as our greatest moment as a Nation. For as we celebrate today, tomorrow, and each night onwards, we remember this as the night Tyranny lays defeated. We must take a pause to remember the ones to whom the credit should truly go.
For the glory does not belong to the politicians nor to ordinary people like you or I. The glory belongs to those who put themselves in harm`s way so that no harm ever came to us. I speak only of the men and women of the Sri Lankan Armed forces to whom we owe this victory to.
