Sri Lanka Tamil refugee camps `to be opened next month` - clearing hurdles for next election

The Sri Lankan government says people living in special camps since the end of the conflict with Tamil Tiger rebels will be free to leave next month.
The camps were set up in the north for Tamils fleeing the final stages of the civil war - which ended in May - and still house more than 130,000 people. An aide to the president also confirmed a pledge to close the facilities.
Sri Lankadrew strong international criticism for holding people in the camps against their will.

General Sarath Fonseka is not the only option for the Common Opposition Candidate, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told Ada Derana today. He added that they have alternatives to the General and if the Government announces the elections the UNF is in a position to nominate even seven or eight Common candidates.

The JVP says it is not apprehensive about being part of the same Cabinet as its b te noire, the Tamil National Alliance, dubbed in Parliament as the mouthpiece of the LTTE, in the event of a caretaker government being formed with UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister.

Ranil Wickremesinghe might like `Mohini` give the Common Candidate over to JVP leader Somawansa Amerasinghe, NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa said. He claimed that the UNP leader Ranil Wickremasighe has got the wind that if the Common Candidate is put forward in a third party there is a chance for him.

New lions to be brought to the Dehiwala Zoo soon

A group of new lions are to be brought from Armenia and China to Sri Lanka, as the current Lions in the Dehiwala Zoo are to be transported to the Hambanthota Safari park when it`s completed, Duminda Jayaratne, Director General of the Zoo told Daily Mirror Online.
He further added that there was an excess of Lions in the Dehiwala Zoo at the moment.

New LTTE leadership`s grand idea of a Transnational Eelam Government suffered an inglorious defeat when 90 percent of the Tamil diaspora showed its contempt by abstaining from voting for the transnational government.
The LTTE leader Nediyavan, who succeeded K P as head of the terrorist outfit suffered a humiliating setback when Tamils in Norway rejected his leadership on Sunday.
Norway based LTTE leader decided to hold the first phase of Eelam Transnational election in Norway itself with the strategy of obtaining a resounding victory to force the sympathetic Oslo regime to recognize the Transnational Eelam Government. But only 2667 Tamils out of a total of 27,000 Tamils in Norwayexercised their franchise.

As Commander of the Sri Lanka Army Fonseka played an instrumental role in ending the Sri Lankan Civil War in 2009. Born to Peter and Piyawathie Fonseka of Ambalangoda. He had his education at Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda (1958-1965) and Ananda College,Colombo (1966-1969), is a sportsman who has participated in swimming and water polo, representing defense services and the country.

Nov 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa turns 64 today, a day ahead of the 4th anniversary of his election to the Executive Presidency.
Born in 1945, Rajapaksa was first elected to the Parliament of Sri Lanka in 1970, and served as prime minister from April 6, 2004 until his victory in the 2005 Presidential election. He was sworn in as the 6th Executive President for a six-year term on Nov 19, 2005.
Several religious events are planned to celebrate President`s birthday and invoke blessings to him.

Rain floods Colombo, Kandy and suburbs

Several areas in Colombo and Kandy and its suburbs took the brunt of the heavy rains that fell last night flooding roads and houses and severely inconvinencing residents and commuters alike. Assistant Director at the Disaster Management Centers Early Warning Dept. Pradeep Kodipilli however said that by this time much of the rain had receded.
Speaking to Daily Mirror online Pradeep Kodipilli said that last nights rain had severely affected the areas of Maligawatta, Maradana, Fort, Dehiwala and Maha ragama as well as the Akurana town in Kandy and its suburbs and had caused disruption to the lives of the residents of the area and the commuters passing through.

Tamil rebels face doubtful future: bbc ....

It is six months since the end of the conflict in Sri Lanka but Tamil Tiger rebels and their supporters are yet to recover from the dramatic military defeat by security forces earlier this year.
The recent attempts by remnants of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE) abroad to revive the movement have not succeeded so far.
Now questions are being raised over the future of its international network and millions of dollars worth of assets spread across continents.
