Jinx Tuesday, 6 April 2010 - 4:14 AM SL Time

A jinx, in popular superstition and folklore, is:

A type of curse placed on a person that makes them prey to many minor misfortunes and other forms of bad luck
A person afflicted with a similar curse, who, while not directly subject to a series of misfortunes, seems to attract them to anyone in his vicinity.
An object that brings bad luck.
A common slang term used when two people say the same thing at the same time, said as a game among the young.
The superstition can also be referenced when talking about a future event with too much confidence. A statement such as `We`re sure to win the contest!` can be seen as a jinx because it tempts fate, thereby bringing bad luck. The event itself is referred to as `jinxed`. The most dramatic historical example of this type of jinxing is the R.M.S. Titanic which was said to be unsinkable, then sunk on its maiden voyage.

The i Pad Launch Friday, 2 April 2010 - 6:00 AM SL Time

It is a gorgeous spring day when I arrive at the coolest address in the universe: 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, Calif., where Apple has been headquartered since 1993. The campus, for such they call it, is enormous yet not big enough to contain Apple`s current rate of expansion. An additional site is being designed and built. After stocking up on `I visited the mothers_day.jsp' class=black>mothership` T-shirts at the company store (we fanboys are pathetic, I readily confess), I am shown around the canteen, lawns and public spaces. It is right to call this a campus, for everyone looks and dresses like a student. I should imagine the only people ever caught wearing suits here have been visiting politicians.

Why Women Leave the Engineering Field Thursday, 1 April 2010 - 7:14 PM SL Time

For years, researchers have struggled to understand why so many women leave careers in science and engineering. Theories run the gamut, from family-unfriendly work schedules to innate differences between the genders. A new paper by McGill University economist Jennifer Hunt offers another explanation: women leave such jobs when they feel disgruntled about pay and the chance for promotion. In other words, they leave for the same reasons men do.

To reach that conclusion, Hunt combed through data on some 200,000 college graduates collected by the National Science Foundation in 1993 and 2003. Her first finding was that women actually don`t leave jobs in science at an above-average rate. The difference, Hunt found, comes from the engineering side of the equation.

Competing Catastrophes: What`s the Bigger Menace, an Asteroid Impact or Climate Change? Thursday, 1 April 2010 - 5:58 PM SL Time

The authors of a recent report concerning a near-Earth asteroid impact and our preparedness disagreed on whether it was reasonable and prudent to compare NEO fatalities with those from climate change

If you ask the average person whether in the long run it is climate change or an asteroid/comet impact that`s expected to kill more people annually, you`ll undoubtedly get some confused replies. Those asteroid movies are scary, but there are no verified instances of an asteroid strike killing any humans, are there? Meanwhile, the science of climate change is currently being overshadowed by a media-driven public debate, mainly in the U.S.

This Really Won`t Hurt a Bit: Wireless Sensor Promises Diabetics Noninvasive Blood Sugar Readings Thursday, 1 April 2010 - 1:50 AM SL Time

For many diabetics, the unpleasant chore of drawing blood several times a day in order to check blood glucose levels is a part of life. Efforts to develop devices that can test blood glucose without the need to repeatedly prick fingers have faltered thus far due to questions about accuracy as well as complaints about skin irritation. One company is hoping to solve these problems with a biochemical sensor that adheres to the skin like a bandage and sends continuous blood glucose readings to a handheld wireless device.

Fighting Shakib keeps Bangladesh alive Wednesday, 24 March 2010 - 12:37 PM SL Time

LunchBangladesh 275 for 9 (Shakib Al Hasan 86* Rubel 0*) and 419 lead England 496 by 198 runs

Shakib Al Hasan`s bristling and unbeaten 86 carried Bangladesh`s lead to 198 against an impatient England side on the final morning of the tour in Dhaka. Shakib was well supported by Shafiul Islam, who made 28 but lost Naeem Islam and Abdur Razzak before the break as Bangladesh heightened their slim chances of securing a draw.

The hosts have made the running almost throughout this game, with England more content to dig in, quietly accumulate and wait for Bangladesh to capitulate. Expectations this morning were that Bangladesh could roll over quickly, but instead, shunning the conservatism of their opposition, they came out with positive intent and ran England ragged. The three wickets they lost, however, undermined the morning effort and England will still fancy their chances of securing a victory.

How to ask a girl out Wednesday, 24 March 2010 - 5:21 AM SL Time

Asking a girl out is no easy feat, especially when you`re a little shy, and you don`t want to ruin your chances with what feels like the girl of your dreams, but don`t worry about that because most girls will give you a chance for just trying. But there comes a time when you have to step up and be bold, or forever wonder what if. Read these guidelines, draw some courage, and ask her out! And remember, all you have to do is be yourself!

Approach the girl you like. Say `Hi` or `Hey` and ask her a question or give her a compliment. It can be scary, but it`s really pretty simple. If starting conversations is not your strong point, read these articles:
