-Sri Lanka declares new safety zone for stranded civilians -

Sri Lanka`s military said Thursday that another safety zone has been declared for the civilians trapped in the island`s northern battle zone to come to the government controlled areas.

`The Sri Lankan security forces headquarters in Wanni, in response to the worsening plight of the thousands held hostage by LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) terrorists in Mullaittivu, has declared a new civilian safety zone, with effect from Thursday,` the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The Railway Department has extended train service up to Thandikulam railway station after a nine year of lapse. The station located nine kilomtres further north of Vavuniya railway station. Here Railway workers are busy making preparations

A swimming pool which is believed to have been used by the high profile LTTE leaders has been located by the troops towards LTTE`s only remaining stronghold, Puthukkudiyiruppu. The swimming pool is 50 feet long and 30 feet width. Its deep end is over 7 feet and a diving board was also available, sources said. By using nets and canopies it had been well concealed to prevent from aerial observation, defence sources further said. Cabana type cottages existing in the surrounding area indicates that high profile LTTE leaders frequented this location.

16 foot long Croc captured

A 16 foot Crocodile was captured near a house in the Kaluella Canal in Hekiththa, Wattala. It was tied up and transported to the Wild Life Department with the help of residents in the area

404 injured and ailing civilians from the Puththukudrippu area who were rescued by the ICRC were brought to Trincomalee last night by sea. With the assistance of the Navy and army these civilians were treated on the shores of Trincomalee in temporary medical units. Navy sources claimed that the majority of those rescued were seniors and children.
