Great Hackers ..... Dedicated to hackers in LNP Thursday, 17 July 2008 - 7:38 PM SL Time

I know a handful of super-hackers, so I sat down and thought about what they have in common. Their defining quality is probably that they really love to program. Ordinary programmers write code to pay the bills. Great hackers think of it as something they do for fun, and which they`re delighted to find people will pay them for.
What do hackers want? Like all craftsmen, hackers like good tools. In fact, that`s an understatement. Good hackers find it unbearable to use bad tools. They`ll simply refuse to work on projects with the wrong infrastructure

The Rhinoceros Hornbill... :):):)) Wednesday, 9 July 2008 - 10:13 PM SL Time

The Rhinoceros Hornbill, Buceros rhinoceros, is one of the largest hornbills, growing up to 122 cm. Only the Helmeted Hornbill is larger, being up to 127 cm in length. The Rhinoceros Hornbill lives in captivity for up to 35 years. It is found in only the highest form of rain forest.

Like most other hornbills, the male has orange or red eyes, and the female has whitish eyes. This bird has a mainly white beak and casque (the tip of the casque curves upward strikingly), but there are orange places here and there. It has white underparts, especially to the tail. This bird lives in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo

Using A Grating With A Grade, Engineers Trap A Rainbow Sunday, 29 June 2008 - 9:25 AM SL Time

Not on Stereo. If anyone want to listen in Stereo mode please use your Stereo Head Phone..:)

ScienceDaily (June 27, 2008) Engineers working in optical communications bear more than a passing resemblance to dreamers chasing rainbows. They may not wish literally to capture all the colors of the spectrum, but they do seek to control the rate at which light from across the spectrum moves through optical circuits.

This pursuit is daunting when those circuits contain dimensions measured in nanometers.

Tears of the Nature............... Friday, 20 June 2008 - 8:41 PM SL Time

O Sorrow, cruel fellowship,
O Priestess in the vaults of Death,
O sweet and bitter in a breath,
What whispers from thy lying lip?

`The stars,` she whispers, `blindly run
A web is wov`n across the sky
From out waste places comes a cry,
And murmurs from the dying sun:

`And all the phantom, Nature, stands
With all the music in her tone,
A hollow echo of my own,
A hollow form with empty hands.`
And shall I take a thing so blind,
Embrace her as my natural good

Dodgy design - Five Egg Fridge... Friday, 20 June 2008 - 1:09 PM SL Time

If you`ve ever been aghast at quite what was going through a designer`s mind when they came up with your latest purchase then you are probably not alone.

A new list compiling some of the most ill-thought out designs in history has been released, with a fridge which has enough space for only five eggs top of the chart.

The designer of that little gem had obviously not considered what the fridge owner would do with the remaining egg from the standard six-egg box but he or she can at least take solace from the fact that others are equally as idiotic.

Recycling in it`s Purest Form... Wednesday, 11 June 2008 - 10:28 PM SL Time

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- Cynthia Beal wants to be an Oregon cherry tree after she dies. She has everything to make it happen -- a body, a burial site and a biodegradable coffin.

`It is composting at its best,` said Beal, owner of The Natural Burial Company, which will sell a variety of eco-friendly burial products when it opens in January, including the Ecopod, a kayak-shaped coffin made out of recycled newspapers.

Biodegradable coffins are part of a larger trend toward `natural` burials, which require no formaldehyde embalming, cement vaults, chemical lawn treatments or laminated caskets. Advocates say such burials are less damaging to the environment.

Archimedes and the Screw......... Friday, 6 June 2008 - 7:46 PM SL Time

Archimedes (c.287 - c.212 BC)

c.250 Archimedes, Greek scholarly. Engraving Archimedes was a Greek mathematician, philosopher and inventor who wrote important works on geometry, arithmetic and mechanics.

Archimedes was born in Syracuse on the eastern coast of Sicily and educated in Alexandria in Egypt. He then returned to Syracuse, where he spent most of the rest of his life, devoting his time to research and experimentation in many fields.

In mechanics he defined the principle of the lever and is credited with inventing the compound pulley and the hydraulic screw for raising water from a lower to higher level. He is most famous for discovering the law of hydrostatics, sometimes known as `Archimedes` principle`, stating that a body immersed in fluid loses weight equal to the weight of the amount of fluid it displaces. Archimedes is supposed to have made this discovery when stepping into his bath, causing him to exclaim `Eureka!`

The Marraiges of Einstein and Darwin............. Wednesday, 4 June 2008 - 8:31 PM SL Time

Most babies born to first-cousins are healthy

Narelle Towie
June 01, 2008

WA scientists are challenging the myth that inbreeding always leads to unhealthy babies.

The highly contentious, often-tabooed practice has in the past been linked to deformities such as heart disease, mental retardation, deafness and even blindness.

Australian research published in 2001 showed that babies born to first-cousins are nearly three times more likely to have serious birth defects.

Chick Magnet for Geeks ..:):) Wednesday, 4 June 2008 - 1:38 AM SL Time

Ladies dig hybrids

Detroit - Chicks dig environmental geeks, at least according to a new survey. The survey found that nine out of 10 women say they`d rather chat up someone with the latest fuel efficient car versus the latest sports car.

These results come from a national survey recently conducted by Challenge X and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors.

Here are some of the other results of the survey:

Nearly eight of 10 Americans who plan to buy or lease a car within the next two years would choose the greener car.
