At a meeting at the Lighthouse the Sri Lankan tourism minister appeared clueless when local hotel operators had been asking him about no booze available on the 31rst of December.
Will foreign tourist have to avoid SL during the peak season in order to celebrate new year in order to have no Champagne at midnight ?
Also participants had been wondering, why Mahinda Mama had chosen this honorable minister to promote SL tourism as he is only capable of the Sinhalese language.

Aug 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka`s Marxist party, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said that the President, Mahinda Rajapaksa has no moral right to hold another Presidential election as he had already pledged to abolish the Executive Presidency before his term ends.
Sending a special letter to President Rajapaksa, the JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said that he has neither moral right nor any possibility of holding another Presidential election according to the mandate received at the Presidential election held in 2005.

Aug 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka and Myanmar agreed to continue joint and separate actions to curb terrorism that is threatening the regional peace and security and improve the bilateral relations between the two countries.
The two countries agreed to cooperate both bilaterally and at regional and multilateral fora in this regard during the during the second Meeting of the Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation between Sri Lanka and Myanmar was held in Colombo yesterday (Aug 04).

Detectives piece together disturbing picture after Beruwala violence
The Government yesterday launched a manhunt for a controversial South Indian Islamic preacher amidst reports that he was responsible for sparking sectarian violence among Muslims in Sri Lanka.
Immigration Controller P.A. Abeykoon told the Sunday Times yesterday he had sought Police help to locate the preacher named Kovai Ayoob.

July 28, Colombo: Following the suspension of pornographic web sites in Sri Lanka, the government has taken measures to ban all the movies rated `Adults-only` in the country.
The Minister of Cultural Affairs Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said the government will impose the ban as soon as possible on the `Adults-only` movies once the Cabinet approval is obtained.
Additionally, all the commercials telecast on local television channels should be approved by the government before telecast, the Minister said. Advertisements on TV, radio and newspapers will be required to obtain the approval of the Public Performance Board.

Mihin Lanka lost Rs. 3 billion

The government owned budget airline Mihin Lanka has suffered a huge loss of three billion rupees for the year ending March 31 last year and 195 million rupees between October 31, 2006 and March 31, 2007, parliament was told yesterday.
Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardena revealed these figures when responding to a question by UNP member Ravi Karunanayake and said the airline operated two aircraft obtained on dry and wet lease systems.

July 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka today said that consumer prices increased by 28 percent this year in Sri Lanka due to global crisis including the financial meltdown in major industrial countries.
Consumer Affairs Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that a positive change in the country`s economy next year is based on the developments such as progress in the agriculture industry in the North and East and the transportation of its products to the south.

June 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today said that the next challenge of the nation is eradication of the drug menace.
Issuing a special release to mark the International Anti-Narcotics Day, which falls on today, President Rajapaksa stressed that his government would take every step necessary to overcome the drug problem in the country as soon as possible.
