IMF approves 2.6 bln dlr loan for Sri Lanka

WASHINGTON The International Monetary Fund on Friday approved a 2.6-billion-dollar loan for Sri Lanka to support its economic reform program and help the country weather the severe global downturn.
The IMF executive board approved the loan as the Asian country emerges from a 37-year civil war.
The so-called Stand-By Arrangement is in an amount equivalent to 1.65 billion Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), an IMF asset that is based on a basket of currencies -- the dollar, yen, euro and pound -- and calculated daily.

Ananda College pays tribute for Old Anandian war heroes

The `Anada Viru Harasara` organized by the Ananda College, Colombo, to pay tribute to the Old Anandians in the armed forces and police was held at the Kularathna Hall this morning (Jul 3). His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, President and, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces was the chief guest to the colourful occasion organized by the college and the Old Boys Association.
The ceremony commenced with the religious observation at the Ananda Viharaya after the arrival of the President. A combined guard of honour was awarded to the President by Army, Navy and Air Force cadets of the college , following the religious activities.

First, we survived being born to mothers who did not have
medical checkups while they carried us and lived in houses
made of asbestos. They took aspirin, ate coconut, raw egg
products, and processed meat, tuna from a
can, and didn`t get tested for diabetes or cervical
cancer...
Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with
bright coloured lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids

ADB Loans Increase to $10.5 Billion in 2008, Annual Report Says

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved $10.5 billion in loans, a 5.3% increase over the previous year, according to ADB`s 2008 Annual Report, released ahead of the 42nd Annual Meeting to be held 2 5 May in Bali, Indonesia.
The 2008 amount is the highest in ADB`s 42-year history. It reflects the region`s ever-increasing development finance demand, and the assistance provided by ADB to help developing member countries deal with the impact of the global financial crisis.
