AFP - Sri Lanka barred Sweden`s foreign minister Tuesday from entering the island on a humanitarian mission, as diplomatic tensions mounted over the conduct of the war on the Tamil Tigers.
Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt had been due to travel to the war-torn country this week to press demands for aid workers to be given full access to civilians trapped by heavy fighting between government troops and the rebels.

Civilians `escape` rebel stronghold in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka`s government has restricted access to the conflict zone where it is fighting the Tamil Tigers. But in an Al Jazeera exclusive, David Chater went on patrol with the Sri Lankan navy as it rescued civilians fleeing heavy fighting off the northeastern coast.
He reports on what has been described as a `humanitarian disaster` from the government`s side of the battlefront.

LTTE 130mm artillery piece destroyed in Mullaittivu

Another LTTE 130mm artillery gun was reported destroyed during a combined Air Force - Army precision strike launched in general area Northeast of Puthukkudiyirippu, this morning (March 31) at around 11.30a.m.
According to Air Force sources, the attack was launched on real-time ground and air surveillance information received. The artillery gun was engaged with precision aerial attack while been trailed into a thick canopy by terrorists using a tractor the sources further said.

TNA parliamentarian and advocate N.Srikantha stated over 5000 people have been killed and over 15,000 people injured in the Wanni region. He added nearly five hundred people had died due to lack of medicines. Srikantha said the present artillery attacks should be stopped and an atmosphere created for normalcy in Wanni and added his party had the need to discuss things with the president.

130th annual Battle of the Blues Royal Thomian Cricket encounter, perhaps the oldest encounter in the world will be played on 12th, 13th and 14th of March 2009 at the Sinhalese Sports Club Grounds.
The most looked forward to sporting and social event in the Calendar of present and past students of the two most renowned high schools in Sri Lanka, the Royal versus St. Thomas Cricket Match, is played over 3 days in the month of March in the city of Colombo. St. Thomas College Mount Lavinia, a private Anglican school has about 5,000 boys on roll, while Royal college Colombo, a government-run non-denominational school accommodates approximately 9,000, making it the largest school in the country.
