Though they initially claimed PTK had fallen on the first day itself, they have subsequently changed their story multiple times. In one version the 58 division `captured` PTK, and in another version the 53rd division `captured` PTK. After the dramatic capture, the government announced their forces were actually 200 meters outside the city. Following that admission we were then left with 8 days of silence - no mention at all as to what is happening with 50,000 soldiers trying to enter PTK.

Today an article appeared in the Island newspaper titled `Fleeing LTTE abandons more heavy artillery in final showdown`. In this article they made tall claims that the Sri Lankan government had captured most of the LTTE artillery weapons. Just to bring some facts to this fairy tale, I would like to inform everyone that not a single LTTE artillery piece was captured.

It has provoked a mass exodus and dispersal of Tamils from the island, analogous to the Roman dispersal of Jews from Palestine in the first century or any other ethnic cleansing meant to remove an entire population.

In the corridors of power whether it be Temple Trees, or the lush temples of the JHU monks, there must be a sigh of relief that Lasantha Wickrematunge is dead.

For at least for a while, those corrupt deal-makers running the country may feel safe to carry on regardless.

Of course there were loud statements trumpeted from those very corridors condemning his assassination and yet more orders to the IGP to probe and pursue his killers. I for one do not expect such an investigation to yield results but believe them to be cynical public statements being made by a regime bent on killing the messenger.
