Re-Settlement of IDP`s in North: An Eye-Witness Account
Last week a group of us got very rare access to some of the resettled areas in Mannar and Killinochchi. I also visited the different zones in Manik Farm (used to be called Manikkam Pannai). As we get to Vavuniya something that strikes me was the number of vehicles (buses and lorries) moving about with IOM stickers. IOM is the only agency that is allowed to shuttle the IDPs from Manik Farm to either to Vavuniya Urban Council (UC) ground or to the resettlement areas or to yet another transit center for further screening.

New bus depot at Thunukkai opened
A new bus depot was opened yesterday afternoon (15) at Thunukkai, Kilinochchi in order to provide transport facility for newly resettled civilians in the area. The depot was declared opened by Security Forces Commander Kilinochchi Major General Athula Jayawardene on the invitation of Thunukkai Division Commander Major Genenral Mahinda Hathurusinghe.

This marks the re-emergence of public transport service after 25 years. The new Thunukkai bus Depot will provide transport to School children as in other areas of the Island. Nearly 8000 civilians have been resettled with infrastructure including schools, hospitals, government offices in the area.

Postgraduate courses debarred in Jaffna university

University Grants Commission in Colombo has ordered the university of Jaffna to stop postgraduate courses conducted at present in its postgraduate faculty, media sources in Jaffna said. Even though the reason is said to be quality of coaching, academic circles in Jaffna believe that Colombo doesn`t want development-oriented courses to be conducted in this university in the Tamil region, news sources further said.

Two solid half centuries from opener Kanchana Gunawardena and Gihan Rupasinghe and a hostile spell of bowling from placeman Suranga Lakmal helped Tamil Union beat Bloomfield by 98 runs in their rain hit SLC Premier limited overs cricket tournament Tier `A` match worked off at the P. Saravanamuttu Oval yesterday.

Tamil Union: 196 for 8 in 34 overs (R. Kumara 28, K. Gunawardena 51, G. Rupasinghe 50, R. Fernando 2 for 29, S. Randiv 2 for 42).

Jaffna, an open prison since SLA occupation Southern media persons

A group consisting 27 media persons from the South brought to Jaffna by the Peace Congress Sunday told media in Jaffna that after 13 years of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) occupation Jaffna peninsula remains an open prison for its residents, before leaving Jaffna Monday. People lock themselves into their houses after dark and are subjected to various restrictions violating their freedom of movement, expression, imposed by SLA, they further said.
