First they came for the Tamils in the No Fire Zone and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Tamil.
Next they came for Lasantha Wickramatunga, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Journalist.
Then they came for Roshen Chanaka, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a factory worker in the Free Trade Zone.
Then they came for Lalith Kumar Weeraraj and Kugan Murugasan and I did not speak out
Because I was not a JVP activist.

Private University Act name changed. Academics given a bone

Sri Lanka Ministry of Higher Education said in a statement that the circular in relation of rectifying the salary anomalies of the university academic and non-academic staff would be sent to the Vice Chancellors tomorrow.
The media spokesman of the Federation of University Teachers` Associations (FUTA) Dr. Mahim Mendis yesterday said that the token strike scheduled on January 17 would be held without change.
The FUTA says that the government should have discussed with the public before the proposed act in relation to higher education would be brought in parliament. Therefore, the the second reason for the strike of the university teachers remain despite the salary anomalies are rectified, as said by the Ministry.

In Sri Lanka dogs are luckier than humans. There are influential persons from social elite to appear for canine rights.
Most of these people will not open their mouths if government decides to kill the rebel youth of the JVP rebel Movement for People`s Struggles (MPS). Two MPS activists have disappeared and nobody seems interested although the MPS attempts to turn the streets upside down over the matter.

Why SL Marxist JVP`s Premakumar Gunarathnum hiding

Sources close to Sri Lanka Marxist People`s Liberation Front ( JVP) dissidents say that the wife and children of JVP dissident faction leader Premakumar Gunarathnam was detained and lengthily questioned at Katunayaka airport.
Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana also said that an Australian citizen woman and two children were detained at airport for questioning.

THE Sri Lankan government`s defeat of the separatist Tamil Tigers in 2009 ended a three-decade war that took tens of thousands of lives. But only now is the government beginning to acknowledge its huge human cost. Two weeks ago, a government-appointed reconciliation commission released a long-awaited report, giving voice to the war`s civilian victims for the first time.
From August 2010 to January 2011, hundreds of people appeared before the commission in tears, begging for news of their loved ones, many of whom had last been seen in the custody of security forces. A doctor spoke of how they managed to survive under deplorable conditions in places littered with dead bodies and carcasses of dying animals.

A President Committee a good tactic to paddle through the troubled waters of A/L results crisis of SL

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa has decided to appoint a committee to probe the issues related to the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination results.
The committee will probe the irregularities of the result issuing process of the highly competitive examination and it is assigned to forward recommendations to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
Minister of Higher Education S.B. Disanayaka says that recommendations will be requested from the committee regarding amending the 1968 examination act that is effect now.

Close associate of ruling family kills a British tourist in Sri Lanka

A close associate of Rajapaksa family killed a British national tourist at a tourist hotel in the home town of Sri Lanka President himself and also injured the Russian national girlfriend of the deceased.
The incident was reported internationally and the tourism industry of the area if not the entire island is taking the brunt of it.
The culprit Sampath Chandra Pushpa Vidanapathirana is a young son of a close associate of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Father Chandra Pushpa was the Chairman of the Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha. His son was well supported by Rajapaksa family at the last election.
