Ministerial Statement: Humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka
Madam Deputy Speaker, I wish to update the House about the grave humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka.
As members would recall, I delivered a Ministerial Statement on Sri Lanka on 5 February.
At that time, I said that the long-term security and prosperity of Sri Lanka would only be achieved through a political solution or settlement that met the legitimate aspirations of all Sri Lankans.

Sri Lankan army ranks media freedom low priorityFont Size: Decrease Increase Print Page: Print Amos Roberts | March 23, 2009
Article from: The Australian
THE sign on the army spokesman`s wall rang the first alarm bells.
Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara had pinned his statement of faith to a map used to brief journalists visiting Sri Lanka: `It`s the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press,` it began. It went on to say the soldier, not politicians, `ensures our right to Life, Freedom and the Pursuit of Happiness`.

Marie Colvin
A THOUSAND amputees were among the wounded and dying waiting to be rescued from a beach in northeast Sri Lanka yesterday, according to aid agencies.
Frightened Tamil families, the latest victims of the country`s 26-year civil war, were hiding in makeshift trenches as they came under artillery fire while waiting to be evacuated from Puthumathalan beach.
Last week the International Committee of the Red Cross removed 460 injured and their families from the area, using local fishermen to carry the wounded on wooden dinghies to the Green Ocean ferry leased for the operation. The ferry was due to return last night to rescue more of the injured.

PAKISTAN is a country in chaos. The extremist threat is growing, the grip of the fragile democratic government loosening, and the economy is in tatters. The army, a nest of nationalist suspicion over the aims of nuclear rival India, is severely compromised
There are very real worries the country could soon collapse.
This brazen attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team is only the latest marker of Pakistan`s downward spiral. Like the bomb that flattened the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad last September or the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the strike yesterday is a clear sign Pakistan is the world`s most dangerous hot-spot.
