Global business groups warn India over new tax plan Thursday, 5 April 2012 - 1:26 AM SL Time

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI (Reuters) International trade groups representing more than 250,000 companies have told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a letter that his government`s new retrospective tax proposals have led foreign businesses to reconsider their investments in the country.

The union federal budget last month outlined a proposal to enable the tax authorities to make retroactive claims on overseas corporate deals and bring in new anti-avoidance measures, moves that have been criticised for further denting investor sentiment.

Eelamist have no use of SF any more. Tuesday, 24 January 2012 - 3:42 PM SL Time

Talking to this columnist, US based Donald Gnanakone from Tamils for Justice said we are interested and determined to expose the truth, and make everyone involved including US Citizens and Residents, fully accountable for their crimes, and provide evidence of other officials` crimes. Justice needs to be served and it can only be done if the truth is told. Since Fonseka is a US resident we will get DOJ and DHS to investigate US Citizens and Residents .
All are presumed innocent and the US judicial system would definitely give them a fair trial after initial impartial investigations, with full deposition via the attorneys of the victims. Now the 3 year anniversary is fast approaching and the US itself is guilty of dragging its feet, and all underestimate the resolve of the Tamil diaspora, Gnanakone further said.

US wants more trade with Sri Lanka Friday, 30 September 2011 - 5:48 PM SL Time

US wants to bridge `huge` trade deficit favouring SL

By Mario Andree

Nursing an ailing economy, the US government has set up a five year plan to boost its exports and Sri Lanka has been identified among several countries as key destinations for this purpose.

`The United States has a huge trade deficit with Sri Lanka, since we import over US$1.7 billion in Sri Lankan goods, and we only exported US$180 million in goods to Sri Lanka in 2010. That`s a big deficit, over US$1.5 billion, and we would like trade to be more balanced by increasing U.S. exports,` US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Ms. Patricia Butenis said speaking at the 19th AGM of the American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham) yesterday.

Call to free British medic held in Sri Lanka

by Gethin Chamberlain

A British woman who was working at a hospital helping victims of Sri Lanka`s civil war has been interned in one of the island`s detention camps, prompting her family to plead for urgent diplomatic help to secure her immediate release.

Speaking to the Guardian, relatives of Damilvany Gnanakumar known as Vany said that she was detained a fortnight ago as the Sri Lankan army moved in to finish off the remnants of the Tamil Tiger rebels after a military onslaught that left thousands dead and sent many more fleeing for their lives.

Close to 600 may be dead on Libyan migrant ship Wednesday, 11 May 2011 - 1:27 AM SL Time

GENEVA Almost everyone on an overcrowded ship carrying some 600 African migrants to Europe is believed to have died when the vessel broke apart within sight of the Libyan capital, the United Nations said Tuesday.

The U.N. accused the Libyan government of complicity in a rising number of deadly smuggling incidents, many involving workers from sub-Saharan Africa who had moved to Libya to find work before war broke out there in March.

International agencies say some recent migrants report being forced onto dangerously packed ships at gunpoint by Libyan soldiers. A spokesman for Moammar Gadhafi suggested that increased illegal immigration was the price European nations would pay for their military and political support of the rebels trying to topple Libya`s strongman.
