Eelam through Non-Violence: Karunanidhi

Reiterating that a Tamil Eelam alone will offer a permanent solution for the Sri Lankan Tamils, who have been subjected to the biggest ethnic cleansing of the century, DMK leader and Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) president M. Karunanidhi on Monday said that the goal should be achieved only through non-violent methods.

Talking to reporters after the first meeting of the revived TESO, an organisation he founded in 1985, Mr. Karunanidhi said that even if the LTTE resurfaced to resume its struggle, the TESO would urge it to follow the path of non-violence. Asked if he had no faith in the armed struggle of the LTTE, Mr. Karunanidhi said, Anyone committed to a cause and pursuing it with a pure heart and uncompromising fighting spirit will get our respect.

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Thursday sought to make a case for the formation of a separate `Tamil Eelam` drawing parallels with Kosovo, South Sudan, East Timor and Montenegro, all nations that have come into being in recent years following the United Nations` intervention and referendums.

The song of freedom is ringing in the ears of Tamils across the world. The blood and tears shed by Sri Lankan Tamils will not go in vain. If not tomorrow, it will come into existence one day, he said in a statement here.

The former Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, does not share the view that India`s vote against Sri Lanka at the U.N. Human Rights Council was a let-down as she feels there must have been justifiable reasons for the decision.

Ms. Kumaratunga, 66, who ruled the island nation for 11 years from 1994, also accused the Mahinda Rajapaksa government of not fulfilling the promises made to India and other friendly countries with regard to addressing the political grievances of minority Tamils.

A Wake Up Call For Colombo Sunday, 25 March 2012 - 11:50 AM SL Time

The passage of the United Nations Human Rights Council resolution on Sri Lanka is proof that the international community disapproves of the manner in which the Rajapaksa government is addressing the fallout of its Armageddon moment of mid-May 2009.

The resolution, backed by India, asks Sri Lanka credibly to investigate allegations of rights violations in the course of its war against the LTTE.
