What Makes Men Fall in Love?

Judging from the kind of mail we get at Men`s Health from men seeking relationship advice, I can tell you this definitively about men: When a man falls for a woman, he falls hard. Men love to be in love. Two Americans and an Israeli scientist won the 2009 Nobel Prize in chemistry on Wednesday for atom-by-atom mapping of the protein-making factories within cells a feat that has spurred the development of antibiotics.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas Steitz and Israeli Ada Yonath`s work on ribosomes has been fundamental to the scientific understanding of life. They will split the 10 million (US$1.4 million award).

Scientists claim to have created a form of aluminum that`s nearly transparent to extreme ultraviolet radiation and which is a new state of matter.

It`s an idea straight out of science fiction, featured in the movie `Star Trek IV.`

The work is detailed in the journal Nature Physics.

The normal states of matter are solid, liquid and gas, and a fourth state, called plasma, is a superheated gas considered more exotic. Other experiments have created strange states of matter for brief periods. This one, too, existed only briefly.

Recently, I went through a period of having nightly dreams that were so vivid and frightening that I would wake up in a battle stance against my imaginary attackers, only to find my cat staring at me like she desperately wanted a new owner. Nightmares are one thing, but these were so lifelike, it took me a while to separate the dream from reality after waking. I still recall each sensory detail of those dreams in all their horror.

We spend about six years of our life dreaming and have accumulated much lore about what those dreams mean, but scientists who focus on oneirology the study of dreams still know very little about the actual process of dreaming. We do know that they arise from Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, in which the brain is as active as it is when the body is awake. Sometimes these dreams are extremely vivid, so much so that the dreamer often has trouble understanding that he or she is not actually awake.

Supporters of Minister Mervyn Silva, under the banner of a hurriedly formed `People`s Media Movement`, protested against Sirasa Media Network at Lipton Circus in Colombo this afternoon (Aug. 11th).

`Prabhakaran`s media bomb is Sirasa` was the slogan, which was also carried in a banner campaign across the city last night.

The protestors, brought in buses from Kelaniya, urged the government to ban the private broadcaster and called Mervyn Silva a god.

Even if you don`t follow sports news, you know that today`s headlines are less about wins and losses than they are about steroid suspicions, doping scandals, and finger-pointing among former teammates and coaching partners.

It`s playground stuff on the highest levels of sport - guys (and yes, Marion Jones, too) seizing on every opportunity to enhance their performance with supplements and drugs. Makes me wonder: Why do we seek all these advantages in hitting a ball or running a race, and ignore the sneaky (but legal!) advantages that we could gain in the most important game most of us play - the game of love and romance?
