A recent newspaper article spoke of Kerala planning to recruit Sri Lankan coconut pluckers a development which will surely gladden the hearts of this small community of skilled workers that is making a silent but significant contribution to the national economy.

The announcement of the Kerala State that it is prepared to recruit pluckers from neighbouring countries offering high perks has given our pluckers international recognition. This is not the first time that coconut pluckers are in the limelight. Over 50 years ago when that outspoken, one time prime Minister Sir John Kotalawala was told that the coconut industry was suffering from a dearth of pluckers, his famous quip was, They have all entered Parliament.

Hettiarachchige Reginald Jothipala (February 12, 1936 July 7, 1987) was a prolific playback singer in the Sinhala cinema. Jothipala rendered his voice to all classes of actors ranging from Eddie Jayamanne, Ananda Jayaratne, Gamini Fonseka, Vijaya Kumaratunga, Sanath Gunathilaka, Ravindra Randeniya and several others of young generation stars like Damith Fonseka, Lal Weerasinghe and other newcomers.

Early life

Jothipala was born the first child of a middle-class family from Southern Sri Lanka.[1] He attended St. Lawrence College in Maradana and St. John`s College in Dematagoda. Jothipala would visit tea kiosks during this period to hear music as his family didn`t own a radio.[2]

SRI LANKA`S main water utility said Friday it had fined the US embassy in Colombo more than US$3,000 (S$4,193) for illegally tapping supplies from the national network.

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board said it found that the supply to US ambassador Patricia Butenis` official residence in Colombo bypassed the water meter.

The US authorities were fined US$3,222 after the unusually low water bills for the building aroused suspicion and prompted an inspection.

`When informed of the illegal tapping of water, they agreed to the fine,` a board official said, asking not to be named.

Two Americans and an Israeli scientist won the 2009 Nobel Prize in chemistry on Wednesday for atom-by-atom mapping of the protein-making factories within cells a feat that has spurred the development of antibiotics.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas Steitz and Israeli Ada Yonath`s work on ribosomes has been fundamental to the scientific understanding of life. They will split the 10 million (US$1.4 million award).

Yonath, 70, is the fourth woman to win the Nobel chemistry prize and the first since 1964, when Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin of Britain received the award.

An enzyme that keeps cells young has won a bit of immortality for the scientists who discovered it. This year`s Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine recognizes Elizabeth Blackburn of the University of California, San Francisco Carol Greider of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland and Jack Szostak of Harvard Medical School in Boston, each of whom receive one-third of the $1.4 million prize, for their work describing telomeres and telomerase. The trio has long been considered top contenders for the prize. `I`ve been hoping for this for about 10 years. I`m thrilled,` says Titia de Lange of Rockefeller University in New York City, who studies telomeres.
