Privileges of ethnic minorities
Friday, 23 October 2009 - 10:19 AM SL Time
Concerned Buddhists want the government to intervene immediately to prevent vandalism at the historic Dewanagala temple by a non-Buddhist minority community.
This temple is located in the middle of the Mawanella-Dewanagala section of a Muslim enclave. Some time back extremists among them caused extensive damage to the temple,
They had tried to erase ancient inscriptions at this site by using high concentrated acid, but for some reason the can which contained acid has fallen down before they do any damage. But other artifacts and the Buddha foot print have been irreparably damaged and the vandals had broken small protective fence around the print.
Wat Dhammakaya of Thailand
Wednesday, 21 October 2009 - 3:52 PM SL Time
Wat (means temple in Thai) Dhammakaya, once completed its construction, is considered to be the largest Buddhist temple on planet Earth and Mecca of Buddhism. It is indeed bigger than Katunayake airport and can accommodate 500,000 people at once. It`s pagoda that is made out of small statues of Buddha (and resembles an UFO when viewed form sky) as well as these statues themselves that are of unique sculpture make the signatures of Wat Dhammakay. The mere size of the complex is bizarre. I take my hat off to those who manage it for the last 20 yrs and still being able to attract thousands of people every weekend.
