Island in the Sun - Desmond with the Gypsies Thursday, 5 July 2007 - 7:33 AM SL Time

A song from the Caribbean (West Indies)

ISLAND IN THE SUN
Harry Belafonte

This is my island in the sun
where my people have toiled since time begun
I may sail on many a sea
her shores will always be home to me

Oh island in the sun
built to me by my father`s hand
all my days I will sing in praise
of your forest waters
your shining sand

As morning breaks
the heaven on high
I lift my heavy load to the sky
sun comes down with a burning glow

BMW, a Germany luxury car manufacturer wants intensified co-operation with Mercedes, another German luxury car manufacturer.
?Co-operation is a good approach as it allows each group its freedom,? said Micheal Ganal, Sales and Marketing chief of BMW.
What could have triggered the thought of co-operation between the two traditional rivals? One reason could be even though both BMW and Mercedes manufacture high-tech, luxury cars but they are not the biggest car makers.

Genetic affinities of Sri Lankan populations
Human Biology, by Kshatriya, Gautam Kumar

The population of Sri Lanka is heterogeneous and is composed of diverse ethnic groups (Table 1). (Table omitted) It is evident that the Sinhalese are numerically dominant, accounting for 72% of the total population. Next in order of preponderance are the Tamils, who constitute approximately 20% of the total population. Among other groups that inhabit Sri Lanka are the Burghers, Christians, Moors, and Malays--the descendants of culturally, religiously, and ethnically diverse groups who colonized the island from time to time (Table 2). (Table omitted) Finally, there are the Veddahs, the original inhabitants of Sri Lanka, who constitute less than 1% of the total population.

Delivered on the steps at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963. Source: Martin Luther King, Jr: The Peaceful Warrior, Pocket Books, NY 1968
