Sri Lankans suffer malnutrition

At present not only children of poor families but children of affluent families too have become victims of malnutrition says Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapakse.
The minister made this observation at a ceremony to make the Agricultural Research Officers and Samurdhi Officers aware of `Divi Naguma` programme of the government held in Kandy yesterday (30th).
The Minister said when compared with health matters in many other countries Sri Lanka is in the forefront but when it comes to nutrition Sri lanka is placed very low behind. He said this is due to the changes in the living and food patterns in our country.

She competed in the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 in which she came in second place giving her recognition all over Europe as well.[2] Alsou hosted the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 held in Moscow.

Obama extends condolences to New Zealand

US President Barack Obama has issued a statement extending, on behalf of the American people and his wife Michelle, his `deepest condolences` following yesterday`s Christchurch quake.
`Our thoughts and prayers are with all those whose lives have been touched by this tragedy, especially as they search for their loved ones and work to recover from this disaster,` he said.
The US had agreed to deploy an International Development Disaster Assistance Response Team, including an Urban Search and Rescue Team.

Sri Lankan universities go for online courses in all three languages

Sri Lankan universities are to commence online courses in all three languages enabling the expatriates Sri Lankans to study in the language of their mothers_day.jsp' class=black>mother tongue.
Chairman University Grant Commission (UGC) Prof Gamini Samaranayaka told news.lk that all universities in the country have been instructed through a Road Map as to how they should restructure their external courses programs in future. Once this restructuring is done the universities will be able to recommence their external degree program and initiate online courses for first degree.

First Private University by April 2011 - either from India or Australia

The first private university under the direction of the Government will be opened by April, 2011, Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake told Ada Derana today. Private universities from approximately 26 countries have already begun discussions and 15 of those countries have given positive responses, he added.
The universities that open in April next year might most probably be from either Australia or India, S.B. Dissanayake stated.
