The USD 500 million bond issue: Fact vs. fiction
Thursday, 13 September 2007 - 7:56 AM SL Time
|
By Harsha de Silva, Ph.D
The Government`s USD 500 million sovereign bond issue has become a political football. Those in the Government side are trying to score, literally, at any cost while those in the opposition are attempting to block it with the same vigor. In the process many a foul is going unnoticed and the football itself is getting bent out of shape. Unfortunately the game is played in darkness, as the Governor of Central Bank of Sri Lanka [CBSL] has announced ?radio silence? and thus spectators are unable to see what is going on in the middle. They can only hear deathly screams. This is an attempt to switch the flood lights on turn on and the loudspeakers.

Comment from the last posting:
How many times did JVP say this before in the last two years:
`The JVP yesterday warned the government to opt for a people-friendly administration immediately or face the consequences.`
Most likely they will say this for the next two years or just short of that.

JVP warns Govt. of withdrawing support
By Gagani Weerakoon
The JVP yesterday warned the government to opt for a people-friendly administration immediately or face the consequences.
Addressing the public rally following a procession from Campbell Park in Borella to Lipton`s Circus with a massive crowd of supporters to protest against the government, JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe charged that the government had failed to benefit the people and warned that the rally itself would be the start of the party`s withdrawal of its unconditional support to the government.

Dedicated to our Politicians and the Central bank Governor!!!
The Cost of living has been increasing at an unprecedented level in Sri Lanka for the last few months. Despite the fact that many of our forum members think otherwise and even prepared to bear this difficulty in the name of winning the WAR (perhaps because it is not them who suffer), the Sri Lankan masses are going through hardships.
It would not be surprising if riots ? of different kind from 1983, break out in Sri Lanka. People might break into super markets and shops for want of foods. Hope something good will happen before that.

Political Circus in Srui Lanka

This is the real status of politics in Sri Lanka.
The ruling party is hell bent on executing the WAR at the cost of economic prosperity believing that the masses will bear the austerity measures as far as the WAR is going well. They are only worried about the popularity to win the election by offering false promises. As a result, the Cost of Living is running out of control despite claims by the politically-motivated Central bank.
The main opposition UNP is in disarray. Unable to take any meaningful action to they are only issuing press releases. Even though some activity is seen, they do not have the same organizing abilities to create a mass opinion. They are not giving leadership to the suffering people. Ranil believes in his own definition of democracy and would expect the Govt. to destroy themselves for him to come to power.

Biggest Price hike for LPG???
But still Central Bank says inflation will come down:
Inflation, as measured by the point to point change in the Colombo Consumers` Price Index (CCPI) decelerated further to 13.7 per cent in May from 16.3 per cent in April 2007. It is expected to continue this decelerating trend during the remainder of the year.
I am learning!!!!

The `disappearance` of democracy
There is a popular theory in local circles today that the whole world ? from the Sri Lankan perspective ? seems to have been turned on its head. Look around, all we see are people shaking their heads in disbelief at the rapid degeneration of a state and its people, ensnared in civil strife, prices that are rendering even middle-class citizens impoverished and the moral bankruptcy of the political leadership.
We live in an age when the powers that be blatantly engage in acts against an ethnic community, evicting its own citizens from the capital, issuing an apology, retracting the apology, justifying the eviction and apologising all over again ? all in the space of less than a week.
