Diplomatic double dealing, thud and blunders
My dear Mahinda Ayya, Ayubowan, vanakkam, assalamu alaikkum and best wishes as the war glory like all personal glory fades away and Sri Lanka finds itself at a gory diplomatic dead-end with the international community`s most powerful sections including the United States and the European Union. The diplomatic mess and muddle is multi faceted ranging from a vital economic issue like the extension of the GSP+ facility by the EU to the religious farce and fiasco involving the Prime Minister and a special presidential envoy in Japan. Despite big talk and boasts that there was no need to respond to any panic button or stitch in time to save the garment industry, the government at last appears to be wearing its best dress for the battle ahead.

Following is the letter written by Mr. Pasupathy arguing why the IMF loan should not be extended to Sri Lanka:
The Hon Wayne Swan MP
The Treasurer
Parliament
Canberra ACT 2600
Dear Treasurer,
IMF Emergency Support Loan-US$ 1.9 billion
We have no doubt that your office would be aware of the application made by the Sri Lankan government to the IMF for the above loan. We understand that the loan is to cover the costs of immediate government functions and to pay for post-conflict resettlement.

I also mourn for Prabakaran
Thursday, May 21, 2009 Leave a Comment
By Basil Fernando
(May 22, Hong-Kong, Sri Lanka Guardian) Following the killings of the entire LTTE leadership there is a strongly expressed feeling among Sri Lankans, within the country or outside, that their deaths particularly that of the leader, Prabakaran, should not be a matter for mourning. I beg to differ!

Squandering a costly victory
P. Chandrakanthan, David Milliband
and Mano Ganesan
By Asanga Welikala
The Tamil press this week reported an ominous incident from Rakwana which might portend things to come. Picturesque Rakwana in Sabaragamuwa is a plantation area with a large population of Tamils of recent Indian origin. The annual festival and procession of the Muthumariamman Kovil has been held there, according to the Thinakkural, for nearly two hundred years.

LTTE is dying but long live the Tamil cause
By B. Raman
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is in its death rattle. It was decisively defeated by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces weeks ago, but a handful of its leadership headed by Prabhakaran has cynically and cruelly prolonged the agony of the Tamil civilians by using them as a buffer and human-shield in order to delay the re-establishment of the writ of the Sri Lankan Government in a miniscule piece of territory (about 20 sq.kms), which has been declared by the Government as a no-fire zone to avoid collateral casualties among the civilians still under the control of the LTTE and to enable them to escape from the clutches of the LTTE.

War Clouds in Sri Lanka
Suppriya Makenthiran
Exclusive to World Sikh News, military strategist writer, Suppiramanian Makenthiran presents a scathing analysis of the mean efforts of the Sri Lanka government to start another round of war with Tamils seeking Eelam. He traces the role of the Indian Peacekeeping Force in Sri Lanka in the nineties and indicts all parties for their childish attitude to a serious effort at reconciliation and conflict resolution.

Of Thondaman and Thondaman
Thondaman (Snr) dreamed for years of changing the humanly degrading estate cooly `lines` imposed during the colonial era. He used his considerable influences with JRJ, Premadasa and CBK for change in this direction - but made little headway .

by A. Kandappah
(March 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) As the run up to the General Elections takes the center stage the spotlight will be on the key players around whom will revolve the eventual result. In the nature of things under the PR system and the voting pattern of the country in the last few occasions, anything between 35-40% of the entrenched votes will generally go in favour of the two major Sinhala groupings. This will once again result in political parties representing the minorities - notably the CWC and the Muslim groupings - to yet again play a key role in the formation of the next government. A substantial portion of the votes in the Tamil dominated areas of the North-East will very likely go the TNA way. In 1988 and 1994 the CWC led by the late Thondaman (Snr) played what the Press described as the role of `Kingmaker.` With the passing away of the elder Thondaman his grand-son Arumugam took over the reins of the CWC and helped the formation of Ranil`s government in December 2001 using his vote bank to the UNF`s advantage and was rewarded with a key Ministry.

Is chauvinism govt.`s official policy? ? fmr. FM Mangala Samaraweera
[31-10-2007 10.30pm] Former Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera has questioned as to whether the government is practicing chauvinism as its official policy.
He poses this question while condemning the arrest of `The Sunday Leader` journalist Arthur Wamanan by the Criminal Investigation Department on a complaint by Enterprise Development Minister Mano Wijeratna.
In a statement, Samaraweera says:
