Five minutes is all I have, so I`m going to say a few things in a very disjointed way Before that there was reference made a couple of times to four great religions of the world being present in this country and whenever that fact is mentioned I always remember, something that Judge Weeramantry wrote about the laws of this country, you know that the laws in this country, we have many laws, we have the Roman Dutch law, we have the English law, we have Thesavalamai, we have the Kandyan Law, we have the Muslim law, we have the Mukuwa law and he said the Sri Lankan law is embarrassed by the richness of its source, rather than the lack of it.

ON DECEMBER 14, 2012, the 54 nations of the Commonwealth adopted a charter setting out for the first time the fundamental values underpinning their affiliation. Alongside democracy, human rights, peace and security, and freedom of expression are certain principles Australians tend to take for granted: the separation of powers, the rule of law and good governance. None stands alone. Democracy and human rights cannot be fully achieved if the rule of law is not in place democracy cannot stand if there is not freedom of expression and without good governance all the rest falls away.

Have The Deashapremi`s Finished Eating `Kiribath` To Think Where The Country Is Heading?

Sri Lanka`s democratic institutions are in ferment once again. The impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake and her quick replacement with former Attorney General Mohan Peiris come as an unsavoury climax to an unedifying standoff between the judiciary on the one hand and the legislature and executive on the other.
The episode is one more instance of President Mahinda Rajapaksa placing his own and his regime`s interest over that of the country and its institutions. It is certain to contribute to institutional decay, attract international opprobrium and underscore the impression that Sri Lanka is ruled not by law but by the will of individuals. And the worrying fact about the country`s travails is that its chief executive, who ought to be the one most concerned about it and do more to strengthen them, is actively contributing to the undermining of its institutions.
