Nov 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka`s opposition is to lodge a complaint at the Election Secretariat against the newly released Rs. 1000 currency note by the Central Bank.

Speaking to the media, the leader of the People`s Faction of Sri Lanka Freedom Party parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera said the currency note bearing President Mahinda Rajapaksa`s picture would be election propaganda ahead of the upcoming crucial polls.

(Lanka-e-News 15.Nov.2009 9.00PM) It is a matter of regret immediately following General Sarath Fonseka`s retirement , the Govt. hasplaced General Fonseka` s life In dire jeopardy.

Prior to General Sarath Fonseka`s retirement as Chief of Defense staff , he had a security contingent of 400 personnel . After he tendered his resignation letter , it was reduced to 125 , and after the Govt. decided to accept his resignation , his security detail was reduced immediately to 25 personnel.

Lankan workers stranded in Jeddah Tuesday, 10 November 2009 - 2:41 AM SL Time
 
Sri Lankan migrant workers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia say they have been living under a bridge seeking help from the authorities to come back home.
One Sri Lankan worker who wished to be anonymous told BBC Sinhala service that nearly 3000 migrant workers, including Sri Lankans, have been living under the Sharafiya bridge in the Saudi capital for months.

`We all have been house maids or in factory workers and were forced to leave the workplace due to various harassments or as a result of not being paid by the employers. Now we are stranded here having no means to go back home,` he said.

President states, no need for foreign courts to solve SriLankan issues. Wednesday, 4 November 2009 - 2:32 AM SL Time
 
President Mahinda Rajapakse stated there is no need for international courts and groups to make any attempts at solving Srilankan issues, stated while he attended an event in Colombo.

He said the domestic law is capable of dealing with those issues. Towards this no need of approaching the International courts, was mentioned by him. President stated such statements, as many pressures are processed to take the Sri Lankan war crimes to the International courts. He said when pressures are instigated against the country, all should get together was mentioned by him.

Its root cause is ethnic tension between the Turkic Muslim Uighurs and the Han Chinese. It can be traced back for decades, and even to the conquest of what is now called Xinjiang by the Manchu Qing dynasty in the 18th Century.

In the 1940s there was an independent Eastern Turkestan Republic in part of Xinjiang, and many Uighurs feel that this is their birthright.

Instead, they became part of the People`s Republic of China in 1949, and Xinjiang was declared one of China`s autonomous regions, in deference to the fact that the majority of the population at the time was Uighur.

Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Saturday, 30 May 2009 - 3:06 AM SL Time
 
Marie Okabe, Deputy Spokesperson for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon speaking to the media at UN Headquarters in New York yesterday (28th) said despite Human rights Commission not agreeing for an investigation into war crimes they would be properly investigated and avenues for such an investigation have not been closed.
United Nations on line stating that Ms. Okabe had stated that serious and credible allegations are made of grave and persistent violations of international humanitarian laws adds that Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, while noting that the Human Rights Council will not agree to set up such an inquiry at this point, says that more information will come out, more evidence will emerge about what did and did not happen. So an international inquiry could still happen further down the line. The Office also said that international human rights law is quite robust -- there are different ways and means to get to the truth and provide some measure of accountability. Sometimes it takes years, but this Session and this Resolution do not close any avenues.
