Sinhala Govt Drops Price Control On Rice After Tamil Traders Are Looted At Prices Below Cost Tuesday, 22 April 2008 - 11:00 PM SL Time
 
The Government has withdrawn with immediate effect the maximum wholesale prices it had imposed on rice six days ago.

The order from the president for the removal of the price ceiling came after a lengthy discussion Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Bandula Gunawardena had with wholesalers and mill owners yesterday afternoon (Apr. 21st).

Speaking at a news conference today, Mr. Gunawardena said however, the maximum retail prices that are in force would continue.

Commenting this morning to the media on wholesalers` objections to the maximum rates, Minister of Agriculture Maithripala Sirisena said the government would not reverse its decision to control rice prices.
