His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa , President of Sri Lanka and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces has been officially informed about the successful task accomplishment by the country`s top defence officials this evening (May 18).
Secretary Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera, Army Chief, Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, Navy Chief, Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, Air Force Chief, Air Marshal Roshan Goonathilake, Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickramarathne and Director General of Civil Defence Force Sarath Weerasekara officially reported to the president that the task entrusted on them to liberate the nation from clutches of terrorism has been successfully accomplished and the nation is free from terror. The reporting was made at a charm ceremony held at Temple Trees.

Today marks an important milestone in the Sri Lanka Army`s history. The town of Pooneryn fell into the hands of the troops after the 58 Division managed to capture the Pooneryn-Paranthan road in the morning. Soon, two brigades will shake hands across the Jaffna lagoon.
The threat to Jaffna has been reduced by at least 50%. Troops will now march towards Paranthan and then towards Kilinochchi, which will soon be surrounded from the south, north and the west. The jubilant Army Commander, the man behind the entire mission, congratulated Brigadier Shavendra Silva in a telephone conversation this morning. Brigadier Silva and his men from the Commando Regiment were the main ingredients of the success.

Deputy leader of sea tigers killed in LRRP attack

Out of all the units in the Sri Lanka Army, the LTTE perhaps fear the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) the most. Their fears were renewed today when LRRP took a price target deep inside LTTE held Wanni. The target was the deputy leader of the sea tigers, Chelian. Chelian and two others are believed to have been killed when the double cab they were travelling in was blown up in a roadside claymore explosion. The incident occurred today at 6.30AM, deep inside LTTE held territory in Mullaithivu.

Two-pronged Navy blockade to thwart arms replenishment bid

A major naval operation is underway in the north-western and north-eastern waters to thwart LTTE attempts to replenish its depleted arsenal. The operation launched about three months ago involving a range of naval assets, including Fast Attack Craft (FACs) is geared to cut off supplies coming from India and other international supply points.
