Present status of the Sharjah Cricket Stadium
Wednesday, 15 April 2009 - 2:18 PM SL Time
|
The Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium, in the emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, was built in the early 1980s and very quickly became a regular home for tournaments as the popularity of one-day cricket exploded following India`s World Cup win in 1983. Between 1984 and 2003 the ground hosted 198 ODIs and four Tests (in 2002 when Pakistan played games there due to political instability at home) , attracting good crowds, mainly from the area`s large Asian expat population. It also hosted Masters (veterans) events and other second-string tournaments. All were played under the auspices of The Cricketers Benefit Fund Series (CBFS)` which had been established in 1981 by Abdul Rahman Bukhatir, and whose main aim was to honour cricketers of the past and present generations from India and Pakistan, with benefit purses in recognition of their services to the game of cricket. The stadium initially started with a few limited seats and very modest facilities but by 2002 had a 27,000 capacity and floodlights.

Colombo Fort
Monday, 6 April 2009 - 1:54 PM SL Time
|
Colombo has wildly varying architecture that span centuries and depict various styles. Many colonial buildings influenced by the Portuguese, Dutch and British exist alongside structures built in Buddhist, Hindu , Islamic, Indian and Contemporary architectural styles. No other place is this more evident in the heart of the city the Fort area. Here one may find new towering skyscrapers as well as historic buildings dating far back as the 1700s.
The Portuguese were the first colonist to settle in Colombo, establishing a small trading post they had laid the foundations for a small fort which in time became the largest colonial fort in the island. The Dutch expanded the fort thus creating a well old fortified harbour. This came in to the possession of the British in the late 1700s and by the late 19th century the seeing no threat to the Colombo harbor, began demolishing the ramparts to make way for the development of the city. Although now there is nothing left of the fortifications the area which was once the fort is still refereed to as Fort and the area out side the fort Pettah or pita-koutuwa in Sinhalese which means outer fort.

Modern irrigation projects of Sri Lanka
Thursday, 19 February 2009 - 1:00 AM SL Time
|
Gal Oya Scheme (1952, Don Stephan Senanayake, the first prime minister of independent Ceylon, the father of Modern Sri Lanka)
Gal Oya Scheme is one of the largest 4 modern irrigation projects of Sri Lanka. This scheme involved the restoration of a number of ancient medium scale reservoirs & construction of the Senanayake Samudra (7680 ha), the largest reservoir in the history of Sri Lanka. Senanayake Samudra is one of the main project of the Scheme. As the Ceylonese (majority Sinhalese + minorities, i.e. Tamils, Moors, Burghers & other citizens of Ceylon, as then called) minister of agriculture in the pre-war cabinet under the British rule, D. S. Senanayake had devoted himself to restoring the derelict irrigation schemes of ancient Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa. Then again, as the first prime minister of independent Ceylon, the father of modern Sri Lanka, Right Honourable D. S. Senanayke looked up to the genius of King Parakramabahu the great (1164-1196 AD) who constructed or restored 165 dams, 3910 canals, 163 major reservoirs and 2376 minor tanks.
