From a lecture by Prof. Gananath Obeysekera:
Let me begin with the classic narration of Sigiriya in chapter 38 of the Mahavamsa entitled `The Ten Kings` dealing with the reign of Dhatusena followed by the next chapter on `The Two Kings` which is about Kasyapa and Mugalan (Mogallana). Chapter 40 is missing, the only one in all of the one hundred chapters that constitute the three Mahavamsa texts. The first ten couplets of chapter 38 deal with the takeover of Anuradhapura by Tamil rulers and the emergence on the scene of Dhatusena, son of an ordinary householder belonging to the Maurya (Moriya or `peacock`) clan. This is followed by a very interesting story about the early life of Dhatusena (couplets 11-28). It says that a certain householder, Dathanama of the Maurya clan had two sons, Dhatusena and Silatissabodhi, by a woman of the same caste.

Tamil activists` shock on return to Jaffna
By Saroj Pathirana
BBC Sinhala
It has been six months since the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka, but normality has yet to return to the Tamil cultural heartland of Jaffna, activists and former residents say.
Groups of former Tamil residents and media activists recently visited Jaffna.
It was an emotional and nostalgic journey for Nirmala Rajasingham - the first woman to be detained under Sri Lanka`s anti-terror laws in 1982 - when she visited her home town after nearly three decades.

Sri Lanka`s war hero, Hon. Minister of Nothing Karuna Amman, recently visited the newly renovated Moratuwa stadium. The Secretary to the Ministry of Sports, Mr. Sarath Ponseka, hosted the Hon. Minister. Although Moratuwa is only a short distance from Colombo, Mr. Pons insisted that Hon. Karuna Amman stay overnight, and sample his newly acquired culinary skills, as well as the local belles.
Hon. Karuna Amman, under whose tactical guidance the Srilankan forces won the war, boasted to the Moratuwa girls how he lined up and shot 600 surrendered policemen in 1990. `Pons should be careful`, he said, `if he forgets to add salt to the food, I will blow his head!`

Four Indians get hundreds: Maninderji

Harbhajan Singh 48.4 4 189 2
A Mishra 58 6 203 1
I was wondering how Maninder will report on the happenings at Ahmedabad. The guy who sells the Mumbai Taj debacle as a great success, the Zorroism of Hemant Karkare as brilliant leadership and India`s helplessness vis-a-vis Sri Lanka as grand strategy will surely be elated by Mishra`s two hundred and Bajji`s near double hundred.

The victimising of those who flee for their lives
By MARGARET TAYLOR - The Dominion Post Last updated 09:36 16/11/2009
OPINION: Australia`s appalling treatment of asylum seekers has again ignited a media frenzy that has generated unsavoury political points-scoring and ill- informed name-calling at the expense of some of the world`s most vulnerable people.
It has further victimised Sri Lankan `boat people` who are dismissed as queue-jumpers and illegal immigrants.
