Tibet`s spiritual leader in exile the Dalai Lama condemned Buddhist attacks on Muslims in Myanmar and Sri Lanka on Tuesday, calling religious violence `unthinkable.`

The Buddhist leader delivered remarks to 15,000 people at the University of Maryland, pleading for an end to ethnic violence in Myanmar that has displaced 135,000 people and killed hundreds over the past year.

`Killing people in the name of religion is really very sad, unthinkable, very sad,` the Dalai Lama said. `Nowadays even Buddhists now involved, in Burma and Sri Lanka also. Buddhist monks ... destroy Muslim mosques or Muslim families. Really very sad.` (Source: Global Post)

UN says Israel didn`t do it Tuesday, 12 March 2013 - 4:43 PM SL Time

JERUSALEM (AP) An errant Palestinian rocket, not an Israeli airstrike, likely killed the baby of a BBC reporter during fighting in the Hamas-ruled territory last November, a U.N. report indicated, challenging the widely believed story behind an image that became a symbol of what Palestinians said was Israeli aggression.
Omar al-Masharawi, an 11-month-old infant, was killed on Nov. 14, the first day of fighting. An Associated Press photograph showed Omar`s anguished father, Jihad al-Masharawi, clutching his slain child wrapped in a shroud. Palestinians blamed Israel, and the image was broadcast around the world and widely shared on social media.

China refuses US$500Mn loan for SL Monday, 4 March 2013 - 1:00 PM SL Time

China has refused a loan of US$500 million sought by the Sri Lankan Government to buy petroleum products and stressed that China would only approve only project loans, informed sources said yesterday

A Finance Ministry official said the loan which was being negotiated last year had not materialised because China was only prepared to grant project loans for which interest rates were relatively high.

China had become Sri Lanka`s biggest lender. The country had obtained US$3.1 billion in loans and export credit to Sri Lanka about 18 months ago. The government had obtained Chinese loans, at interest rates varying from 2.9 per cent to 8.25 per cent, for major development projects such as the building of the Hambantota Port, the Mattala Airport, the Moragahakanda Irrigation Scheme and the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant. Meanwhile the country`s total debt burden has increased to Rs.6,610 billion with 52 per cent of it being from domestic borrowings. - See more at: http://www.dailymirror.lk/news/26139-china-refuses-us500mn-loan-for-sl.html#sthash.zkI3m9cs.dpuf
