1. White vans without number plates; the symbol of disappearances reappear

Chandana, I totally agree....the happy past I mentioned in my previous post was of the years I lived in Colombo and Kandy, and the holidays to Jaffna...we enjoyed a great life (not in a material sense) our friends were Sinhalese, Tamils, Burghers...I don`t think we knew (or cared about) the others ethnicity, our communication was in broken english, sinhalese or tamil. Our parents would take us to the perahera and then stay out till the late hrs (by my standard) without fear. I`m not religious by any means (hindu by birth only) have christian and buddhist relations...have been to all types of temples (except the mosque) worshiped at Dalada Maligawa. The  ones I don`t care about are the Indian swamis (thats another matter)
Sometimes I dream of an hybrid (eng/Sin/Tam) language that could unite the people...`coz its the language that started this madness...well I`m a dreamer!

2. Govt denies peace talks with LTTE `unconditional`

If we cut through all the rhetoric, claims and counterclaims, we can still reach a certain conclusion

The LTTE have always gone into peace talks from a position of strength. On this occassion however they by no means can claim to be in that position - If I was to list their most recent failures one by one...

1. Their attempt to hold Marvil Aaru - FAILURE
2. They were kicked out of Muthur - FAILURE
3. Their attempt to hold Sampur - FAILURE 
4. Their forward defence lines in Muhumalai have been overrun (if you wish we can `forget` that one, as it is still disputed by some in the forum)
5.Their landings at Kayts were repulsed -FAILURE 
6.They have as yet no anwer to the aerial bombardments - FAILURE
7.Thier attempt to capture Jaffna - FAILURE
8.Their attempted assasinations (Pakistani ambassador, Gen. Fonseka) - FAILURE
9.Two of their attempted bombings in the south - FAILURE
10.Their attack on Colombo port - FAILURE
11.Their attempts in sinking the troop carriers vessels - FAILURE
12.Their attempts at procuring arms in USA - FAILURE
13. Their attempts in getting unfavourable resolutions against the SLG in the EU - FAILURE
14. Their attempt in influencing the aid donor meeting yesterday - FAILURE
15. Their attempt to blame the SLA for the deaths of the girls in the camp - FAILURE - it wasn`t even mentioned in the EU resolution
16. Their attempt to blacken the SLA for the murder of the aid workers - FAILURE. In the EU resolution the government is actually commended for looking to appoint an international human rights body and appointing independent Australian forensics people.
17. Their claim to be the sole representatives of the tamil people - FAILURE - Karuna is mentioned in the resolution by name..
18. The famed Tiger Airwing and runways etc and their claimed impact on Eelam 4 - FAILURE
19. The sea tiger wing - FAILURE. they have had no impact whatsoever
20. Their attempts at defeating Karuna - FAILURE. Still alive. Still hitting their camps in the east
21. Their attempts at getting the Norwegians to remove the ban in the EU - FAILURE
22. Their attempts to apologise to India - FAILURE
23. Their attempts to see the Indian PM (or even at least Karunanidi) - FAILURE

would you like me to go on?????

So those of you who say the LTTE are not weakened and in their desperation are looking for peace talks - you are burying your heads in the sand. Face the facts.

The government should set pre-conditions such as disarmament, withdrawl from Elephant Pass, Kilaly and Palai, prior to talks or keep hitting them again and again and again...
