AnuD,
[I don`t understand about any strategic importance of the said construction.] Currently, all goods, soldiers and civilians are being transported to Jaffna by sea and that is very expensive. In addition to that, navy has to allocate a considerable amount of their resources to escort those cargo ships. Secondly, the supply to jaffna is heavily depends on safety of the Eastern sea route and Trincomalee harbor. that is the very reason, LTTE attempted to capture Trincomalee harbor several times. If you have a safe land route to Jaffna, you can save more than hundred times what you spend for the said construction. In addition to that, such a link between Jaffna and Poonaryn enables SLA to deploy their forces rapidly either to Jaffna or Poonaryn battle front. So you need to station there limited resources and rest can be used to deploy somewhere else. |
