Sri Lanka is a country that has a long shared history of Sinhalese/Tamils. Both Sinhalese& Tamil kings ruled Sri Lanka without discriminating the other community. SWRD Bandaranayake, promoted Sinhalese at the expense of Tamils. A far thinking leader would have promoted both Sinhalese & Tamil interests without discriminating the other. We all must think as Sri Lankans. Criteria for devolution should be based on finding the most economical way to develop Sri Lanka. It should not be a compromise for those who want a separate state. To have long lasting peace we all should stop thinking in racial and religious lines. It does not matter whether the leader is Sinhalese or Tamils. A capable intelligent Tamil leader is more beneficial to Sinhalese than a useless Sinhalese leader. Similarly, a capable intelligent Sinhalese leader is more beneficial to Tamils than a useless Tamil leader.] all what you have said could have worked if applied in 1950s but now it is too late after all these losses. federal type solution with internal self determination is the viable alternative for a separate state. |
