There is not much point in bragging about technical know-how`s when it comes to solving issues in a country at war.
Protecting a unique language or a religion by law is not uncommon in other nations, if it belongs to a minority. The majority always would enjoy power and hence it can do the needful to protect their culture by sheer implementation of law and order. If we take into account Kashmir, there is a law in the Indian constitution that prohibits any outsider from buying lands in Kashmir. But Kashmiris are free to buy land anywhere in India. Does it mean that Kashmiris are smarter and the the rest otherwise? It`s not. What the lawmakers of India have done is that they enacted a law with special previlege to those people so that those people will feel secured under united India. Otherwise, they would feel secured under the arms of the Pakistanis. Now what has happened in SL is the reverse of what had happened in India. The minorities were sidelined more by the warped thinking of the politician under the guise of protecting Sinhala and Buddhism. They have had the power all along to protect the culture by simply enforcing law and order. No one was going to force Sinhalese to forget Sinhala or learn other languages. The politicians simply didn`t care for the minorities and were always prowling for majority votes. People should take a fare share of blame for keep electing guys who were inclined towards such short sighted visions. Finally, today`s war is only a creation of some greedy lawmakers. The day you make such people disappear from the arena, there will be light at the end of the tunnel. |
