Stranded near Talaimannar owing to engine snag
RAMANATHAPURAM: In a swift operation for a humane cause, a Coast Guard ship on Thursday crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line and rescued a stranded Indian fishing boat near Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. Commandant K. Janardhanan, Commanding Officer, Coast Station, Mandapam, said the operation was carried out based on the request of the Sri Lankan Naval ships. Coast Guard ships had never crossed the IMBL for such an operation in the past. On seeing the Indian boat of Rameswaram (TN-10-MFB-790) with 4 crew members in distress situation about 12 nautical miles from Talaimannar, the Sri Lankan Naval ships informed the Indian Coast Guard. The hull of the boat was reportedly damaged and it was unable to make it way owing to engine failure. He said since the Sri Lankan ships expressed their inability to retrieve the boat, as they were not in a position to go there at that time, the Coast Guard Ship, Vivek, an Offshore Patrol Vessel with helicopter, was pressed into service after clearance from the Coast Guard headquarters at Delhi. The ship, which went up to 6 nautical miles from the IMBL, rescued the boat and subsequently towed and brought it to Mandapam. The crew of the boat - Kingsly, Nambu, Christhuraja and Velladurai - were also brought to the Coast Guard station. Mr. Janardhanan said the successful retrieval of boat and its crew was possible because of the proactive gesture of the Sri Lankan Navy in informing the Coast Guard about the distressed fishing boat and fishermen at sea. It eventually enabled the Coast Guard to rush a ship immediately to the area and prevent them from running into dangerous situation such as sinking, collision, grounding or any other untoward incident. Earlier, the Coast Guard repatriated two Sri Lankan fishing boats with 11 fishermen to Sri Lanka. The boats were earlier apprehended by a Coast Guard ship near Karaikal on 10th March for poaching in Indian waters. Subsequently, they were released by Indian Government. (The Hindu) |
