One House was rammed into two by the British.... remember... they manupulated all the minorities in the government service so that Sri Lankan Tamils had more people in the service.
This was their tactic every ware even in India... then the Sri Lankan Tamils after freedom unfortunately asked for 50-50 of positions for Sri Lankan tamils..... this was the start of the ethinic trouble... I am not saying there aren`t issues... but asking for 50-50 was unrealistic....... this roused suspicion and of course Bandaranayake made it worse.... and Sri Lankan VP made it to the top of the terror list... wining the World Cup of terrorism... this year... according to FBI.
I do agree war is not the way.... CFA should have been in place.. but LTTE did not think so since 2002... now only they want to abide by it 100% when they are pressurized....and driven 40 feet underground.... in the cold... ( according to Adele`s autobiography...)
