Some of the members do not have the understanding, that though certain historical developments occurred in our world that we all denounce today , things have started to change from the 20th century and now we are in the 21st century.
If we are going to discriminate Christians of our country because of the crusaders , then it is an absolute stupidity. The majority of the Christians in our country again are Singhalese. The bridge between the Tamils and the Singhalese were ,non other than the Catholics and the Christian community but not the Singhalese Buddhist or the Hindu Tamils. Some of the members perhaps have not heard what `Martyrs of Mannar` was. This was about a Tamil king in Sri Lanka killing 600 Tamils including women and children who had converted to Catholicism 400 years ago. Portuguese trying to convert people to Catholicism probably had killed many ,but not millions as one of our Singhalese Buddhist Chauvinist claims here. It is true that the process of proselytism in Sri Lanka began after Portuguese invasion in the 14th century. Francis Xavier an ardent Spaniard in 1541 wrote of an Island in India inhabited by gentiles with no Moors nor Jews where there was great scope ` for the Gospel`. The morally bankrupt invaders acted in forceful conversion of natives of the coastal regions of this Island as well as brought more Malabar Tamil Catholics from India to consolidate their power in occupied areas. However this was five centuries ago. If the majority of the Singhalese Buddhist are now trying to say that the Buddhism of this country is at threat from Evangelist proselytism it is a cover up of their betrayal of Buddhism by them selves. Through out the history of Sri Lanka for 2500 years Buddhism had survived various foreign invasions starting from South Indian Chola invaders to British. It also survived the Catholic and Christian influence from Portuguese and Dutch occupation to British. Government take over of the Christian missionary schools in 1961 further eliminated the Christian influence on education. So what these so called pseudo Singhalese Buddhist patriots talking about the Evangelical threat to Buddhism is just rubbish. |
