This is what was told about Devananda..
[In an interview published in a weekend newspaper Minister Bandaranaike says, `Now the country cannot be saved without the unison of the two main parties. Spoiling the agreement between the two major parties is a national crime. We cannot solve the national question with the people like Devananda who cannot obtain at least 50 votes. We have to talk to LTTE and come to a consensus with them. The problem will not be solved although we talk big from Colombo. LTTE is requesting the remerge of North and East and total power devolution. If someone is allergic of the federalism, 100 other names can be used. However, this government is not ready for that. How many times I said we have to go to talks. We cannot solve this problem through war or any such measure.` `There are no countries that solved the ethnic problems via war. The result of war is devastation of economy, destruction of lives of fighters, the spoliation of their families, increase of cost of living and the darkening of the country-65533 s future.` Mr. Bandaranaike further says, `It is true that the cost of living is unbearable now. Village people weep when they tell us how they keep their family fires burning. Everybody blames the government. Poorest sectors are in immense trouble due to kerosene price hike. Today the people are not talking about the war victories but the cost of living. If we love the country, we have to solve this problem through maximum devolution of power in a united country and the remerging of North and East is essential. UNP and JVP did not attend the Thoppigala celebrations. Hakeem came but criticized it later. India, European Union, US, Japan and all the major countries were not present. It is a great setback.` `We talk big while being ants in international politics. One Minister threatened Germany that is the leader of 26 countries of the European Union. It is the world`s third powerful economy. We depend upon the grants provided by them.`] |
