The ethnic problem could only be solved by the 2 major parties getting togather. In fact the differences before the election were very small in the overall approach but the differences between CBK and the JVP were huge. No wonder they were incompatible.
Unfortunately MR is trapped in the agreement with JVP and the JHU. It is an ageement just to win elections like a typical Sri Lankan politician usually does knowing the country is likely to go down a slippery slope of self destruction.
India certainly could make a significant impact if it wishes to do. In addition other international pressure ( like EU travel ban) on the LTTE is a must so that they cannot flout every known human right mainly on the helpless tamils trapped in their iron fist.
As Ranil has said for many years including during the election, consensus in the south is a must but with the JVP and the JHU calling the shots unfortunately MR is likely to be a victim of his success.
